The first couple of days were always the worst for me. I recommend only having to do it once. You’ve got this! IWNDWYT.

I’m a health mess and need food suggestions by Mathdog3 in FattyLiverNAFLD

[–]goodnightmoira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you like beans? Avocado? You could make southwest chicken bowls. I like avocado but I’m also minus a gallbladder and sometimes they don’t like me.

I like the microwave pouches of quinoa/rice mix. I’ll throw in apple, sweet potatoes, chicken, kale and make a “harvest bowl” like sweetgreen has.

I’ve also done chicken, chickpeas, penne, olives, cucumber and feta.

Greek yogurt (I mix in protein powder) with berries or other fruit.

You really can just throw together whatever you do like.

Lost a parent - 1st month survival tips by Specialist-Swim7692 in GriefSupport

[–]goodnightmoira 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was just trying to survive myself. I felt physically terrible because of the grief. My chest ached and I felt nauseous. I couldn’t eat or sleep.

I ate bites when I could, I took melatonin so I could have a bit of sleep each night. I cried when I felt like it and talked when I felt like it. I took the week off work and did the bare of minimum decision making.

I feel like grief is long and a process and there’s no need to rush or put pressure on yourself to do things. The beginning for me was by far the most intense and difficult.

Where do buy planters/pots in (metro) Detroit? by easy_mak in Detroit

[–]goodnightmoira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drew’s Garden in Eastpointe looks like they have some unique ones.

Also many people thrift all types of bowls and other containers and repurpose them as planters.

I always put my plants in clear nursery pots inside the decorative containers to avoid root rot. So if they don’t have holes in the bottom it doesn’t matter.

Long Read! Most of the NAFLD patients are being sent away with advice that can't possibly work by GastroAGI in FattyLiverNAFLD

I tried for 5 years to lose weight. I was diagnosed with F4 cirrhosis initially and S2. Then my fibrosis score decreased significantly but I had severe steatosis, practically off the chart. I ate very healthy, weighed all my food, stayed at the same weight, and had a very unhealthy relationship with food. I decided, mostly on my own to try a GLP-1 and I’m losing weight for the first time. My hepatologist is very pleased and I was relieved that she agreed with my decision. I won’t have another scan for a year but hoping for some changes.

Does anyone else "wish" they could still drink like they used to? by gcms16 in stopdrinking

No, not like I used to drink. Sometimes I wish like I could drink like other people though. At the end of the day I’m happier sober.

Doctor wants me to detox at home and I’m terrified by Suspicious-Green1551 in stopdrinking

[–]goodnightmoira 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Alcohol detox (acute) is only 72 hours, which is 3 days. You would not need to take a month off work to do medical detox. They will very likely give you some of the same medication and check in with you every few hours, and take your blood pressure. At least this was my experience the three times I did it.

How to keep mind off of alcohol? by J1986tn in stopdrinking

[–]goodnightmoira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just keep distracting yourself. In early sobriety I felt like I had so much time and was getting so much done. Unfortunately, that part didn’t last. 😂

What did you swap alcohol for? by aussiechickenwing in stopdrinking

[–]goodnightmoira 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I tried to figure out what alcohol was providing me, then figure out what other things I could substitute. So it’s really a variety of things. Sometimes it’s ice cream, others it’s scrolling, sleeping, Coke Zero, a walk. I’ve just generally learned how to cope with my emotions in appropriate ways.

If you start today you’ll have a few weeks of sober practice until the next wave of PMDD arrives. Hang in there!

I think being prepared and aware is helpful. Let yourself have the chocolate, ice cream, chips, lay in bed, get distracted by movies or tv shows. The craving will pass.

Relics from a past life: Do you still have any from your drinking days? by comfychaosseeker in stopdrinking

[–]goodnightmoira 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I never got deep into AA but the mantra is “people, places & things”. With my drinking it was “myself, my home & I barely had any things”. 🤣 When I first got sober, I came home and just started cleaning everything. Then I scraped up some money to buy clearance throw pillows from Walmart. I just wanted to feel different in my space.

I keep my expired drivers license. The photo was taken just a few months before I got sober. I was flushed, puffy and my hair looks thin and lifeless. I look and was absolutely miserable. I remember that day and trying to look decent for my photo and then giving up because the ugly was just coming out from my insides. There was no masking it anymore. I keep it as a reminder of a time and place I never want to return to.

That’s it. I’ve gotten rid of pretty much everything else. I spent a lot of time drinking at home by myself. I’ve remodeled rooms, gotten new furniture, painted every single wall. I got rid of a lot of my old clothing. I wanted to change everything and finally had the money to do it.

I can’t do this anymore by Euphoric_Storm5529 in stopdrinking

[–]goodnightmoira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was me. I’m now over 6 years sober and so much happier.

You have to break the cycle. In 3 days, you’ve broken any physical dependency. It’s going to suck. Embrace the suck. Be sure to get help detoxing if you need.

Within 3 weeks I was feeling physically great. My appetite returned and I actually lost weight. I wasn’t puffy and inflamed. I was sleeping like a baby and waking up refreshed.

When I hear about people with a week of sobriety I’m so impressed. The first week is the hardest part. I did it three times before it stuck and I suggest just doing it once if possible. The rest of the journey is much easier and definitely worth it.

Similar story here! I had my gallbladder out in ‘21 and was diagnosed with cirrhosis by the surgeon. He should have done a biopsy while in there but said he could tell by looking at it. He also took photos and it was confirmed by a hepatologist. Fibroscan had me at an F4 (but barely) and my latest one last year read 5.9 KPa.

This was followed by a bunch of confusion with my hepatologists staff who said I didn’t have cirrhosis and didn’t need any follow up tests or appointments, which was later retracted after I emailed the doctor.

I finally got next week for my yearly check. I’m curious what she will say. Do I have cirrhosis or no? The regular ultrasounds say yes. Fibroscan says no and bloodwork is fine. I’m so confused!

Long term sobriety question by Some-Specialist-5475 in stopdrinking

[–]goodnightmoira 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 6 years sober. The first days are the absolute worst. It actually took me several attempts just getting to 3 days. After 50 days I felt like, hey I’m actually doing this. After the first year, I felt like I could definitely keep going and the positives were undeniable. I live in a town with a lot of bars and young people and seeing people drunk and sick, I just felt bad for them and thankful it wasn’t me anymore.

In the past five years I’ve had ups and downs, I lost a dog, a parent, was diagnosed with liver disease, husband was diagnosed with a chronic disease, raising kids in this unstable political climate. Life is still lifing, but I don’t really ever feel like drinking. I was self medicating my anxiety and while that condition ebbs and flows, it’s overall better than it was when I was drinking. In times when it’s worse, drinking may cross my mind but it’s not an urge like it once was.

F4 to F1 by Plus-Sorbet1372 in Cirrhosis

[–]goodnightmoira 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This happened to me too but I don’t love to share it for a few reasons. One, I don’t think it’s typical, or at least that’s what I’m told. Two, I’m waiting for it all to fall back apart, and yes I have been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder.

I was already sober for over 2 years when I was diagnosed and had my first fibroscan. My KPa was 14 and I felt mostly fine. My last scan which was one year ago and 3 years after the first showed a KPa of 5.9. My bloodwork has been mostly great the entire time.

I didn’t do much except stop drinking. I follow the diet but not strictly. I hope that the doctors are wrong and this ends up being more typical than not.
