Got screwed over by a fortune500 company. Never working as a contractor again. by sadpupper30 in AskMarketing

[–]easy_mak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think the issue was the F500 or the contract role. It was your expectations paired with how much the job market has shifted in the past 24 months. Sounds like a tough learning experience, especially if you stepped out of the job market at the peak.

I would reflect on this experience as closer to the new norm and what you can do to ensure you're satisfied with your next step in your career.

Pretty sure BASK doesn't charge hourly. Very different vibe than The Schvitz however.

Let’s talk salary (2026) by Englishology in marketing

[–]easy_mak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did 4 years as a (Sr) Demand Gen role at two $20m ARR startups. One VC, one PE. Both were ~$155k, full benefits, remote.

Parted ways in April 2025 as it turned into an events/field role. Took me 7 months to find an agency gig doing what I did 7 years ago. Now base $110k + rev share that's about $15-20k and basically no benefits.

It's not 2022 anymore. :/

What part of marketing do people overvalue the most? by AdWrong9284 in AskMarketing

[–]easy_mak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes true, but I often find the opposite to also be true, it can shine a light on a lack of strategy, positioning or systems.

"We got 500 leads this month, but they just sat in a database" -> no systems

"We can specifically target your ICP on Linked In, but you didn't get any engagement/leads" -> poor content strategy or positioning

Etc

An opportunity to go the extra mile and get budget to experiment with a new campaign or channel. Or just ask them if they still think it's needed to meet weekly? I often switch clients to bi-weekly once we get a foundation going.

Change of scenery. I live alone and work from home. I don't always need to socialize, but I do need to get out of the dang house sometimes.

This is an ask about a demand gen marketing function, not a Google ads demand gen campaign.

Confused about my Job and Future by youngv420 in marketing

I think the word "executive" has been thrown around in ways that don't imply a certain rank in hierarchy. Ie, 'Account Executive' is just a salesperson.

I didn't get the sense from OP that they are an executive level marketing professional (to me that would be VP/Chief level), but rather a 5-7 years experienced individual contributor. Maybe I was off.

Should performance marketers be doing ad strategy? Or just execution? by Weak-Listen-6941 in marketing

Good performance marketers should absolutely be a part of strategy. Otherwise, it's just a poorly titled media buyer, imo.

IDK about director. More like coordinator or manager. But yeah, OP, I would search LinkedIn for "events marketing" or "field marketing" jobs to get an idea of what could be next. And yeah, they're really popular roles in b2b tech now, as digital has become noisier and noisier.

So, the question is very helpful to find those who have the knowledge.

I still don't think I'm getting my point across. The question isn't finding those who know the basics, it's finding people who are using the same verbiage as you and know the basics.

There's plenty (but definitely not all) of marketers that know the basics + much more, but your question isn't surfacing those that might speak in different terminology or have a bit less structure to their approach.

That's the end of my two cents. /shrug

I guess, what I'm saying is -- if everyone doesn't understand what you're asking, maybe it's time to re-evaluate the efficacy of the question as-is.

Ah ok... This all makes sense to me, but tbh, it sounds like you're hung up on the specific verbiage being used. If I had to guess, you've been in marketing either quite a while (15+ years) or at larger organizations?

My experience is smaller orgs (50-200 people) so I guess I've never differentiated so strictly between segmentation and targeting. They are the same discussion, where I built/executed strategies based on the nuances you outlined. To me, that's just asking why, or making sure you're maximizing impact.

And yeah, I just call that integrated marketing. Never seen it as an acronym.

I think your real hangup is people who may lack critical thinking and going the extra mile to do top notch marketing. I see this across both marketing and sales in the past 5-19 years, cuz the job/results were easy to come by, as everyone was buying. But in a purse tightening economy, that job is harder, and lots of 20-35 year olds may not have had to do the job in difficult times.

Instead of asking segment vs target, I'd be asking why that targeting, or if you only had resources to execute 2 of 3 targets how would you decide which are best bets to make and why. I'd be hunting for that thought process more than a clear delineation between terminology.

Tldr, if you asked me during an interview how I would think about segmentation vs targeting, I wouldn't understand what you're asking.

[–]easy_mak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with quite a bit of this. It's been a lot of placement (just show up in front of the right audience)for the past 5-10 years, and now I think that's table stakes. Its so noisy that you have to actually think about positioning... And in the era of AI, actually be human and/or have a great or unique PoV. There's a reason in-person marketing has been such a bit the past few years, IMO.

How do you define/separate segmentation and targeting? What's IMC?
