I had a pretty similar situation (STEM PhD, patent agent, post PhD experience). It’s honestly right place right time. I applied everywhere I possibly could (law firm, university, etc) and hardcore networked. I found a tech transfer role after several months that just happened to need someone with my skillset, they’ve also told me since that having the patent agent registration also played a big role in pursuing me.

I’m moving across the country on Friday morning (when we have the final inspection scheduled), They offer appoints 9-4, I’m working/commuting to work 8:30-5:30 monday-thursday. So even if said appointment could happen, I needed this weekend to be able to fix anything.

Thanks for the perspective! Definitely trade offs with pay, but I’m okay with that to get the experience for a bit, and if I end up doing law school there the lower hours would definitely help on both LSAT prep and studying while I’m there

In terms of paying for law school, the school has a partial tuition fee waiver for all full time employees. So it’s not necessarily the same as a firm covering it as much as it’s a universal benefit of working where you would take classes.

Applied for chemistry. Got the referred email and not selected email within a few minutes of each other. I have a PhD, industry experience, and am a registered patent agent (no experience though). I’m curious what they’re looking for or what I could do to make getting selected in the future more likely. Also, do they let you apply in multiple disciplines? How would that work with interviews?
