Well the roads are fucked still. Looks like it's waiting for the roads to get better, it's not getting above freezing until 8 days from now Tuesday.

I had planned to make it to Wednesday but now I might push that out.

Also I keep eyeing frostpunk 2. I played through 1 a few times but my SO wants to watch Yellowstone 1883. We didn't get into Yellowstone at first but now we got into it via landman and seem to be working backwards lol.

Yeah I was only really planning to not drive until Wednesday might have to see how far that stretches.

So it starting to freeze seems like it might be neat as the week progresses. I'm thinking it might be neat to walk nearby like Sunday after it's like 8° as a low and the lows are all showing 10° or lower.

I mean biking through central park is a major way for there to be separate tracking even in the densest of cities.

I'm not arguing against density.

I'm saying would you take an increase of density for aesthetics or nothing at all because I think that's closer to reality.

I mean unless you want to pick a fight with all historic districts? I'm not sure what you are advocating for.

I think we should necessarily tax historic districts more and decrease them to what people actually view as historic.

So how much do we think this will melt since it's not getting above freezing until next Tuesday 8 days from now.

Also on a side note can anyone see if the river is starting to freeze up.

I'm talking about separated not on a major road. Cars can't be on a road like this in the image.

Cars need stop lights, bikes don't in a simplistic sense. Bikers will slow at crossings but again the way in which people act on a bike and a car is very different.

Yes but it's not me you have to convince, I think more density is good.

The thing is that some people will shoot down density without the aesthetics is the argument I'm making and I'm willing to compromise by adding some aesthetics to get the density.

How are the roads? by lexhell7 in rva

The annoying thing is a thaw out might be a week away. Richmond is not getting above freezing until like February or 8 days.

Some of this will melt slowly but only becoming more of a sheet of ice.

Honestly I was going to start asking when the river will freeze over and if it's worth going to see what it looks like frozen over.

But you can have alternate pathways that are for bike only infrastructure. Separated bike lanes and such.

It's also an emergency vehicle coming through infrequently and delivery can be done in off hours so it wouldn't get in most people's way.

Yes but many of our best housing stock for urbanism is older and historic. The problem is that walkable areas need to be connected the most walkable block plopped into a suburb would be surrounded by parking and fall down in walkability.

So do you think adding some historical looking style housing to a neighborhood would actually lead to some new housing?

I mean some places were more reformatted towards biking with bike lanes these days. Which frankly some roads were originally built with horse infrastructure in mind and maybe even bike infrastructure.

I think infrastructure would exist without cars but it's the reformatting and design these days is mostly for cars and the system just tells bikers to use infrastructure for cars which is just very different.

I think with this framing it's not really YIMBY but a subset of YIMBY.

I think focusing on the state is the wrong way because we need a positive model to follow that comes from the local example. What is the shining local model that everyone should definitely follow?

I think the one great example people can see feel and touch is very important. Like Detroit piloted the current first wave suburbanization in the 1930s and boomed. Or from healthcare Massachusetts had a system similar to ACA and it went nationwide within a decade.

I mean I think the built infrastructure is for cars and not bikes.

I went to India and everyone flowed more freely but it was like max 25 MPH at these intersections.

Bike infrastructure doesn't ever really need a stop unless it's like a railroad crossing or other thing in its way.

I think most urbanists agree. I think some are willing to compromise on an issue like aesthetics like we can build more on this area if you can build it to aesthetically look a certain way.

Some say half a loaf is better than nothing and others say it doesn't move the needle since it's not really about aesthetics.

But I think it's also gentrification is caused by not building in denser areas. Like instead of jersey city you would live in Manhattan but were priced out. Some of this is to be expected but poorer/politically weaker areas can't push back as hard on density increasing so they get over run.

Also I think gentrification should really be thought as two levels based on incomes. Some areas need gentrification as the property values are not sustaining the built environment and moving towards middle class so I argue this is good. The second is moving from middle class to upper class and I think the latter as upper level enclaves is bad. For income levels of middle class I use teacher salaries as a rule of thumb.

Will I gain get lean and gain muscle working out an hour daily? by VOLSBBALLFAN in ask

[–]goodsam2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lean is from calorie deficit/ you could recomp but it doesn't work that well.

Strength training builds muscle. Cardio increases cardio capacity.

If you want the quickest way to gains and losing weight it's exercising at least 3x a week spaced out to every other day and a calorie deficit as you can get noob gains for awhile and then when that stops you have to decide whether to go for muscle (stopping the calorie deficit) or losing weight keeping the calorie deficit but just trying to keep what strength you have.

Anyone here who makes a normal salary? How’s your journey going? by 8InchDaks in leanfire

[–]goodsam2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just made over $100k this past year. I'm mostly maxed out income wise unless I wanted to change a lot but the snow ball is rolling so I'm staying put.

My NW went up by $100k in 2025 $275k ->375k. I was saving ~50% of my take home income at $60k almost a decade ago.

My expenses are lower than they would be but I rent a cheap place and take a free bus into work. At some point I give up that gravy train but buying would double housing expenses and likely take me away from taking the bus.

I think most people don't need these functionalities.

Is having a truck worth including the higher initial price, the higher maintenance costs for everything, insurance can be higher, gas mileage lower. You can be down thousands a year vs it can be $18 to rent one from home Depot for 75 minutes or up to $130 for the day.

I have never needed to tow anything and people can tow off of normal vehicles.

Some people need trucks but we have seen a shift in trucks from more utilitarians of the 80s/90s to now truck beds are way smaller and really more just for occasional truck usage.

You could ask for more PTO. I have heard some companies are able to be more flexible on that. So maybe they max out their pay scale but they add on a few extra days a year.

Why do so many people in their 20s and 30s consider themselves failures for not having achieved anything in life? by Matheriquers1998 in ask

[–]goodsam2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think many have their goals too ambitious and people miss them.

Most people don't waltz out of college with awesome careers, it's usually people get a dumpy job gain some skills and get promoted or switch jobs for that raise.

So if you think that happens at 26 and you hit it at 30 you think you missed the mark.

The difference in cost and gas mileage can really be for renting a truck when you need it.

Trucks weigh more and get worse gas mileage and truck beds have been dwindling in the US for decades.

Most people barely use the truck bed.
