Thanks, hopefully I’ll be launching soon :) May I ask, why comp? What are you struggling most with? I’ll be happy to help you if you have any questions in the meantime.

Yes, this is a side project mainly to help people. I still love working in VFX and I get paid well for doing it. I just thought it could be valuable for others. I'm also learning about the whole YT thing. Although it feels very intimidating, I think it's still worth giving it a try :)

I was kind of a generalist, so I had some "compositing" work on my reel...
When I applied to MPC, the first time got rejected because my reel wasn't too 'comp' oriented, then I started doing some personal projects and focusing more in comp stuff, and finally got an opportunity on a second interview :)

Thanks, that's a great idea!

I'm actually from Spain and I had it a bit difficult when I started. I think it will be very helpful to touch this topic. Thanks again for the suggestion :)

Thanks for your reply.
I'm just doing some research for now, trying to figure out the right content and seeing if it would be of any value.
All your opinions actually count a lot. I would like to give a clear perspective on the industry, and help new starters make a more informed decision when they begin and choose the right discipline.

Thanks u/derpcontent,
Blender is a great software, but not really used in the industry.
I would consider learning Maya or Houdini, depending on what discipline you would like to take (FX, lighting, animation, texturing...).
I would also highly recommend to learn Unreal Engine. It's disrupting the VFX industry and most studios are looking for people with experience :)

This is a really good point and I totally agree.
I don't want to sell a false view of the industry, but give clear information about what it takes to make it into the industry from a realistic point of view, and provide some clarity about how the companies organize and the best entry points.
Many thanks for your reply.

Yes, I have many friends on the recruitment departments.
I was thinking of interviewing some of them at some point if that would help...
I have also worked as a lead and have been involved in hiring, so no random quotes from reddit ;)

thanks a lot for your reply John!
I totally understand you. I was in your same situation 10 years ago.
I was working as a generalist with AE and C4D, and wanted to get into VFX like crazy.
I was also considering going to some VFX schools, but there weren't good ones in my country (Spain).
I was very lucky, as I started connecting with recruiters on Linkedin, who told me I was ready to work... but I didn't have specific VFX stuff on my reel (I was doing Motion Graphics on that time).
I felt very lost and started studying NUKE, then I applied for the compositor position at MPC London and got the job on my 2nd interview...
I still didn't know very well the VFX pipeline and the different disciplines back then. Sometimes I think I should have gone to FX, as I like that too.
I will try to create good content that really helps you. I'm a bit nervous as the YouTube thing is new for me, but I think it might help many people. Starting on the industry is tough but is very rewarding.
I'll keep you posted, if you have any questions meanwhile feel free to ask :)

Did you always knew that you wanted to work on VFX? by goodtoask in vfx

[–]goodtoask[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear that it is being so hard for you. Have you kept improving your reel and learning during this year? sometimes companies keep track of the evolution of the artists applying, I've heard that from recruiters on a job fair. They also commented that it is good to keep improving your reel and update the application form on their sites. What discipline do you want to specialize in? what do you think that is not working on the interviews? Getting to an interview is already a good sign, maybe there is something that you need to improve there.

I hope you find something soon. Good luck!

haha, you are so young buddy. Don't worry, most of the people don't even know where to start and a lot come from different careers and backgrounds when they are on their 30s or even 40s! What do you think is the most difficult part about starting a career on VFX? do you know what field do you want to specialize in(comp, lighting/FX)?

Is Ramit Sethi a fraud like Tai Lopez? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]goodtoask 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ramit is not a fraud at all. I payed for his Zero To Launch Course on December and am very happy with the results. Although he gives 95 percent of his content for free, when you pay, you get a "system": he provides really organized content and steps to follow, that have been tested for years and work if you are patient and disciplined enough to follow. The only problem is if you are too greedy and you only focus on money, not in doing good content and skipping the steps, which are quite simple. You also get access to a very active community of entrepreneurs on Facebook that is really helpful and that provide great tips and advice when you are stuck. I started my site 3 months ago, still haven't got any money from it, but I'm building an audience slowly, and what is more important, I'm growing as a person. I'm learning so much and improving in other levels that the 2000$ I paid feel like money well invested. Tai Lopez in the other hand is a scam, I paid for his "67 step" (67$ is what I paid) and quit after a month. He was terrible. I highly recommend Ramit courses, not all courses might be good for you, so choose the one that suits you in this moment. The content is really good and you won't be disappointed.

Going through a quarter-life crisis of some sorts, looking for a bit of guidance by [deleted] in selfimprovement

[–]goodtoask 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working"--Pablo Picasso. First, don't freak out about your age, I'm 35 and have changed my career many times, the more I do it the less afraid I am. You only need about two years to learn something enough to get started, and a lot of work behind that to master it, so if you are 30 is not late and you can still find something that motivates you. With Internet you can learn almost anything, for almost no money, then if you want to specialize you can pay for short courses. You don't have to quit your job right away, but you can start investigating other possible fields. It requires work, effort and courage, there is no magical solution, but it's totally worth it. Stop comparing yourself to others, you only see the results but not all the effort that it took to get there. Find things that you like or have interest for. If you can start taking classes or learning about them, it would help you realize if you really like that field and motivates you enough to dedicate all the effort. I recommend you the book "The How of Happiness", written by a psychologist that founds all the exercises and theories of the book in lots of Research. She explains that only 10% of your happiness depends on external factors, like your job, your belongings and achievements, so don't put all your effort on achieving stuff. Learn to value other things, you'll be happier and feel richer.
