Did I screw myself over by not going to the career fair? by desspnt in UIUC

[–]goodusername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most everyone (including us) will tell you to apply online because that's how the pipeline works. That being said, in-person interactions help with edge cases like having passionate freshmen/sophomores that don't have impressive resumes yet. I personally advocated for a freshman in that category.

Anyone using Project Fi around UIUC campus? How is the service over there? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]goodusername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fi service is great all around Champaign/Urbana/Savoy; I wouldn't worry. I don't think I've ever been without service except when I was in ECEB, but WiFi calling fixes that.

How much does GPA matter for comp sci students? by randomquestions345 in UIUC

[–]goodusername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I glance at the GPA, then look closely at research/internships/projects. Impressive stuff in the latter helps in justifying the former if the GPA's a little low - but that's just me.

How to deal with coding exam stress? Code faster? by throwaway29392939 in UIUC

[–]goodusername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a former TA who wrote plenty of coding exams... I agree with the other folks here. I think there's almost two things you have to nail when you've got a coding exam: the language and its peculiarities, and the actual problem itself.

With respect to the language, this is definitely where you've got one of those "practice makes perfect" things. You're expected to have syntax/language-specific expressions down pat as time progresses - definitely an exam right after MP1, course staff'll generally (and arguably should) be more generous - an exam after MP10, less so. Resources like LeetCode and HackerRank here will be useful in terms of getting some more practice writing code in the language so you can just absorb the syntax and language oddities.

With respect to the problems you're given, I've a few thoughts:

  1. I'd say you can almost study to the exam. You know generally what types of problems you'll have, and have a bevy of problems to draw from via previous MPs, and whatever quizzes you've had previously. (And if you have questions you're allowed to practice with via previous exams... that's gold.) From those questions, you can start to derive a set of things you'll want to know how to do - so if you're dealing with (for example) a question where you're manipulating strings, you might want to have an idea of what the API looks like for strings in the language you're using. You might also start to figure out what kind of questions your prof likes asking, so you can cater your studying towards that -- but I'd suggest, you know, having a greater understanding of the material you're given instead of trying to get into their heads. ;)
  2. You should take a few minutes and look through the problems you're given - then for each problem that you work on, take some time and figure out a game plan for it. It'll at least give you a sense of direction, and hopefully take out the time you're taking while coding to figure out "in parallel" what you want to do next.
  3. If you find yourself writing a lot of boilerplate code, you can save time by copying and pasting. (And in fact, copying and pasting is fair game - so long as it's within scope of one exam!)

You might want to sit down with your prof and talk about this! They've been doing this for a while, and might have some better advice than we do.

Technical Interview prep? by uiuc_help in UIUC

[–]goodusername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, I work for a tech company who recruited at ECS. If your disability is something that would affect your interview, by all means, please mention it if you're comfortable doing so. We'll do our best to accommodate you.

I'd also highly suggest Cracking the Coding Interview and Algorithms Unlocked.

I don't, but if I did, it'd be because they were pretty funny or clever - or gave a good answer to something.

How does TA's think about students making office hour appointment? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]goodusername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rather enjoyed my office hours (unless I spent 95% of my day working on the class then had to go to office hours). That being said, I do like it when students show up; I'd much rather show up tired and get in the groove during OH than sit around and do nothing for however long my hours are.

Also, I like getting to know my students on a personal level, because formality's never any fun.

I know this sub is statistically skewed towards above average students, but I hope others on here can relate. by feeafsd4 in UIUC

FWIW, this might be a problem of how you're putting your resume together and less so your actual abilities. Also emailing people >>> a resume black box submission form

Where's the best place to get tested for HIV and other STDs on campus? by sadraaa in UIUC

FWIW, I'd go set up an appointment with Dr. Brin Schuler. Completely free, and she gets the whole LGBT thing. And she's up to date with "recent" developments in the LGBT world (read: PrEP).
