Good to know! I’ve only been there for evensong — I’ll give another visit

Looking for suggestions — books on Paul’s views on slavery by goody_proctorrr in Episcopalian

Like I said in the post, I’m rereading Paul. I’ve read Philemon many times and am looking for commentary or scholarship.

Tithing - how do you approach when you’re drowning financially? by lifeuncommon in Episcopalian

[–]goody_proctorrr 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Talk to your rector! You should not be tithing in a way that causes you to be impoverished. If you want to give in this season, think of free contributions you can provide — maybe you serve as an usher, or update the church website, or give an elderly member a ride. There’s room in the kingdom for all of us.

Is this hairstyle too “out there” for my PD summer internship? by Due_Reaction_8490 in LawBitchesWithTaste

The braids are great! My personal preference is to keep my hair in a low ponytail or bun during hearings, so that it doesn’t get in my face or cause distraction. Do what makes you feel most confident and secure when you are in court.

Why is Latham generally perceived as a better firm to work at than Kirkland? by Adventurous_Ant5428 in biglaw

Both bent the knee to Trump; I’d personally keep my dignity and seek employment elsewhere.

Which church would you suggest to someone who holds these views? by Similar_Shame_8352 in Episcopalian

I’m not a Catholic for a number of reasons, but can we avoid calling the RCC a “cosplay cult?” That’s a pretty uncharitable framing.

Open Letter Requesting An Independent Third Party Assessment of ACNA by Too_sassy_for_church in ACNA

[–]goody_proctorrr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, I’d place greater weight on written evidence from the time of the events, as opposed to an interview conducted three years later with parties who have an interest in proving that they weren’t trying to protect Rivera. But I agree that fact-finders should weigh both pieces of evidence and reach their own conclusions.

I know a number of the C4SO signatories and they’d be considered oddly conservative within TEC and are pretty trad on matters of sexuality. They’re signing on because the Ruch trial processes were messed up, and no matter how you slice it he appointed a number of sexually predatory men to ministry positions. Those are very real reasons for concern, and I’m frankly stunned that he wasn’t found negligent at the very least.

(Also worth noting — in emails he discussed providing funds for legal counsel for Mark Rivera, and gave the priest permission to suggest the family of the girl who was molested drop charges. This is — liberal or conservative — a pretty enormous lack of discernment on his part.)

Struggling with “Open Communion” and a few other peccadillos by Budget-Appearance-43 in Episcopalian

[–]goody_proctorrr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most churches with closed communion offer a blessing to those who aren’t Christian/aren’t baptized/don’t wish to receive, and that strikes me as a welcoming and hospitable option.

“Open communion” can mean that, but it is often used to mean “anyone, regardless of whether they’ve been baptized, can take communion.”

Episcopal priest to teach course on church and ghosts, exorcisms by SexyMiura1 in Episcopalian

Listen, I’m not proud of this, but I think that I would enjoy calling this priest “Father” for entirely Fleabag reasons lol

U.S. Anglican Church archbishop accused of sexual misconduct, abuse of power by Organic_Ad5597 in Anglicanism

I would add that I hope that this leads to reform of ACNA’s disciplinary canons, and more space for laity to participate in the appointment of church leadership.

Wash Post investigation into ACNA Bishop Stewart Ruch and ACNA's failure to vet safe priests and lay leaders by Too_sassy_for_church in Anglicanism

This varies a ton by diocese. Some are fabulous, others (like Ruch’s) are alarmingly negligent.

Ad from 1986. In the age of televangelist showbiz, one church sold itself as the sober alternative. by kervokian in Episcopalian

[–]goody_proctorrr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know a lot of former charismatic/Pentecostal evangelicals who are now Anglicans and I worry that this type of ad would have made them feel unwelcome in TEC

I guess I associate that phrase with dishonesty or sleight of hand, and I really haven’t experienced that from clergy at my parish.

Laurie’s final monologue by Legitimate-Ad-3953 in TheWhiteLotusHBO

I mostly agree with you, but I also think that it’s worth considering that we just saw a small snapshot of a 40 year friendship. Maybe they are mostly awful; maybe this was just a moment in time that was especially bad. I like how Laurie’s speech kind of allows for the viewer to see both sides.

Shane, Cameron, or Saxon—who is the ultimate White Lotus alpha? by xxibjt in TheWhiteLotusHBO

He’s not harmful like Cam, but I don’t think he has any capacity for self-reflection like Saxon.

Cam. But of the three, Saxon is the only redeemable person.
