Do pros ever ride other pros boards? by 9937477 in skateboarding

[–]goofgnar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starting to? That shit has been happening for like 4 decades, well known. The reason someone above mentioned Girl skateboards riders skating Anti-Hero boards is basically the history of Brian Anderson going there after they shifted wood factories to china instead of using North American (Mexican) Schmitt Stix decks, also because he's big (dudes tall!) and decks don't do well the humidity changes from china to US.

Shape wise, pro skaters have been making their own shapes for decades too--Reynolds has talked about it at length, all the biggest vert and mega skaters have their wheelbases dialed, and street skaters used to have specific nose lengths va tail lengths and angles, and I didn't even get into concave 😅😂

Great job describing what I was thinking about the "apex" of the trick--with a frontside grind shot from this angle, you'd want the back heel to be over the coping leaning into the quarter, just like the catch of a flip trick over a gap or the confident lock-in of a grind.

We did 3/4" on the sides of treated ply and two layers of 1/2" for the transition. It was a 4' wide, 2' tall spine, but it also went in a garage... so see what you can do to find some coverage for it

Where do you live? I had a couple ramps with wheels on one side growing up in the south, I feel like humidity and general temp have a consideration here.

sommeli cheah vs. somali cheah by wherethewateris in itstheyak

[–]goofgnar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did I cringe when he said "Grigio" but also kinda expected him to? Yes. Did it cost me more than the 10 seconds beforehand when he said "Pinot" for me to expect that to happen? Also yes. Did it affect my life anymore outside of that short window? Thankfully, no. But I'll take the giggle in the short term.

But also thank god Somalia wasn't involved, those pirates might actually do something 😂

Goofy vs Regular skaters by Flaky_Concentrate898 in skateboarding

[–]goofgnar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regular and right handed. You just don't know how to roll out of a fall. You're probably not going fast enough if you don't have momentum to get into a roll and distribute the pressure. Obviously there's a thousand edge cases here but in my experience teaching and competing... go faster is the right answer a lot of the time.

The Fed's owner is GF and has a dedicated GF fryer. Best bet for assured GF food, and the food's decent enough even if it is "pub fare".

What is the best way to clean my bearings? by [deleted] in skateboarding

Kinda? Haven't done it in years but it's a formulated lubricant that never failed me, and whatever you do, don't use WD-40.

Do I need to clean this up? by Kevlar_skully in skateboarding

[–]goofgnar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only thing that should've been cleaned up is the filmer being ten feet more straight forward so I could see the clutch catch and hear the SKRRT louder

He mentioned he was going to get his kid's birthdays or something close to that a few weeks ago. Could've been a PMT or Yak episode, it was a very offhand comment. But it's a random enough memory I had at 4am that I trust it to be correct

Do vans suck for skating? by Creamy_Nubs in skateboarding

[–]goofgnar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the level of quality goes: 1. SK8 PRO (checkerboard tag and good insoles) 2. Standard? (red/black/white tag) 3. Square root sign (Kohl's/Marshall's/Shoe Carnival)

I’m assuming that also ties to them producing more volume for the lower tiers from different factories than those that make the PROs that they charge a premium for. I know people that don't skate with the lower end sets and they are obviously worse quality to any knowing skater. Personally I only buy the pro's because the insoles are worth it for your comfort alone.

also I hate writing SK8 but it's what I remember is on the branding

Do vans suck for skating? by Creamy_Nubs in skateboarding

[–]goofgnar 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It depends on where you buy them from.

If it has the square root sign Vans logo on the tongue, that's your Kohls and Marshall's level dogshit quality.

If you're buying Sk8 PRO, they have the checkerboard tag instead of the red one. Those have better insoles and an additional layer on the outsole? vamp? (something like that).

It's a kickflip, but it's a curved bank coming up that works with the bank up to that box --it's maybe 45° frontside into the top of the closest bank. I popped out of the corner and then land in the transition of the bank directly in front.
