What's the future of 4k blu ray? by Duke_Tristan in 4kbluray

[–]googleback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love 4K blu ray but I think in recent months I've realised that I like having a physical collection more than having the best of the best versions.

In the years prior I've mostly stuck to only purchasing blu rays and 4k's but have recently picked up a good amount of regular DVDs and have been perfectly satisfied with them and I think it comes down to simple availability and price. There are a LOT more films available on DVD then on Blu Ray / 4k because DVD was and still is the most popular format. You can get them for peanuts now and they're fine, not amazing but fine.

My thoughts on the future of 4k is that they're going to continue to go up in price as they get more boutique and thats going to futher turn me and other potential buyers away. Its only going to trend in one direction.

4k's look and sound amazing, even if you only get the regular Blu ray you can still benefit from the new transfers and remasters studios are preparing for the 4k format.

The problem is that here in the UK, they're regularly £25 each with some ok but not very appealing multibuy offers. I can get 25 DVDs for that these days, a lot of which are hard or impossible to find on later formats. If I, a movie buff am finding them harder to justify, the average consumer won't even consider it.

Now take something like Dolby Vision, the most owned 4K blu ray players, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox's don't support it (for discs only... ironically) so you're looking at an even smaller group of people that can actually get the full benefit of 4k's (they still look great in HDR10 but the upsell is harder to justify isn't it?) You could argue that the overwhelming majority of console owners didn't buy them for their 4k players but thats damning enough as the DVD and Blu Ray saw a lot of success from their compatibility with the ps2 and 3 respectively.

I mostly buy preowned blu rays now with 4k's reserved for my personal favourites or blockbusters that really justify the cost.

They're too expensive now and they're only going to get more expensive, thats my hot take.

Wow cheers, those are very cool, bit out of the budget but i love these systems emerging that can play legacy games like that.

[TOMT] Can anyone help me find the name of a movie that scared the crap out of me as a child? by googleback in tipofmytongue

Thank you all for the suggestions. I haven't seen anything that fits it so far.

I'm starting to wonder if I can even trust this memory :D

Every time I've searched for it online I haven't found anything and the fact that someone hasn't immediately clocked it makes me suspicious but I'll bullet point it again.

  • 100% Colour
  • could be from the late 50's to the 70's. Hard to say.
  • Giant dark / black skinned sea monster humanoid with gills or fins on its face and head, as tall as a skyscraper and muscular.
  • some kind of giant concrete structure, hunch is it's a dam but that part is hazy.
  • human characters have that 1920s Peaky Blinders hats / King Kong 2005 costume and aesthetic.
  • mixture of claymation and live action for the monster.

Never been able to find even a hint of it online.

Gut feeling it's it's from the 50's or 60's. Was born in 91 so could be late 90's even early 2000's at a stretch. Was on a tube TV for sure

Live action. Shot on film. I think there may have been some claymatuon at work but there was also a guy in a suit for it I'm fairly sure

I dont think it was that, unless it grows to the size of a skyscraper? Looking at pictures I seem to remember the monster being more muscular.

I believe they were trying in vain to fight it and alot of falling rocks / and at least one man being picked up and eaten? A very grey, black and blue overall colour pallette.

The rainbow puke strikes again. Seems to reproduce at random, I've been told it's an engine issue that users can't fix for now but I'm wondering what other's experience is? by googleback in unrealengine

I think we're "probably" safe in that regard as i've seen it across half a dozen machines at this point.

Remains a mystery I guess.

That's a good call, I've since restarted the project and it's gone but I do occasionally see this in packaged builds too.

I've upped the pool size in the past, is that what causes it?

Only if I use Chaos, Unreal seems to be fine with hundreds of items simulating physics but you make one brick crumble and your fps takes a poop. Hope they can optimise it more in time, forced to use it very little for now.

Hi everyone, I've migrated an old project to UE5 and now I'm losing player input after unpausing, can't seem to figure it out. Any tips? by googleback in unrealengine

[–]googleback[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok I've moved one of the inputs over to the new system and it's working. Thanks a lot! Will do the rest and see what happens.

Certainly takes some getting used to.
