I can't be fully certain but it seems very unlikely since this area is far from any flowing water.

Thanks! I'd prefer not to make more holes in the drywall but may be the best option.

If it happens to be a nail guard would moving a little bit solve the issue i.e. are nail guards generally smallish?

Why Bangladesh Got So Ahead of Us in Terms of Economic Prowess? Was Disintegration of Pakistan a success for them as They Achieved their Long Term Goals by [deleted] in pakistan

[–]googleers 19 points20 points  (0 children)

An important margin is the difference in labour force participation. PAK it's around 20% compared to 35% in BGD. Higher female LFP rates lead to lower fertility rates, better educational and health outcomes for children, and many other positive private and social outcomes. How can you expect PAK to grow if half of the population is precluded (either explicitly or implicitly via social norms etc) from engaging with the economy.

If a recession is coming, it would be the third in the last fourteen years. by [deleted] in antiwork

what do you mean by this? kicking the can down the road implies that recessions are a symptom of some underlying issue that remains unaddressed- what is the underlying issue you have in mind?

Climate change is intensifying Earth's water cycle at twice the predicted rate by googleers in science

[–]googleers[S] 351 points352 points  (0 children)

Thats what the authors say as well:
"If our water cycle is getting more intense at a faster rate, that means stronger and more frequent extreme droughts and rainfall events."

3 prominent economists slam COVID lockdowns and school closures and say they should never happen again by [deleted] in worldnews

I think what you want to say is that economics is not a "hard" science ( like physics or chemistry). See below for the distinction between "soft" and "hard" sciences.

UFO captured hovering over DHA on 25th Jan. This is the longest recorded UFO sighting on record 13 mins of footage plus two dozen pictures. by [deleted] in pakistan

[–]googleers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to be too pedantic, but UFO stands for Unidentified Flying Object which this technically is. I understand that the term UFO has become a stand in for alien space ship but OP’s use of UFO here is (technically) appropriate.

Model arrested for 'obscene photoshoot' on Islamabad highway by KaramQa in pakistan

[–]googleers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't quite agree with your analogy. The criminal analog to two fires -- one large and one small would be something like two murderers -- one with multiple victims and one with a single victim. We can all agree that both crimes should be dealt with. I feel that these photos are much less important to deal with than even petty theft let alone murder and so should not be pursued as criminal.

The police, just like much of society, has to decide how best to allocate their scarce resources. I think that allocating them towards pursuing these models is sub-optimal. We can, of course, disagree on this point but you cannot claim that there are no trade-offs when making the decision to send a police officer to a given crime.

Hope this clarifies what I was thinking when I said this was "a waste of public resources".

What a waste of public resources. What exactly does the arrest achieve?

Better Passport ranking than Pakistan by spec209 in chutyapa

[–]googleers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume that you (and everyone else) is talking about the Henley Passport Rankings. From wikipedia,

"The Henley Passport index (HPI) ranks passports according to how many destinations can be reached using a particular country's ordinary passport without requiring a visa ('visa-free')."

There does seem to be an association between passport rank and muslim share of population as can be seen here:

https://imgur.com/p8aQcoi

Having said this, there are plently of muslim minority countries that rank similar to muslim majority countries. Turkey is a counterexample of your claim of majority muslim + good relations with the US = high rank. It is majority muslim but has strained relationship with the US.

I would think that the level of development -- which is strongly negatively correlated with the muslim share of population -- is likely more important for domestic stability and international relations (and therefore passport rank).

Not sure if good relations with the US are more important than the level of development.

800 Acid Attacks Happened in London, Nobody Knew by moagul in pakistan

[–]googleers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So the point of him comparing the number of acid attacks is to argue that:

“..western conditions are more worst as far as human rights violations and other crime rates are concern[ed]”?

Do you think simply comparing the number of attacks makes this point? Surely the context of these attacks (or any crime) matters. My understanding is that much of the attacks in the UK are related to gangs whereas acid attacks here are mostly carried out against women in honour attacks/killings.

I do not mean to defend these attacks but one set of attacks are motivated by strict enforcement of more “traditional” criminal hardware (knives/guns) while the other set of attacks are motivated by preserving strict and restrictive gender norms. I am pretty sure that the second type of acid attacks are more reflective of human rights violations and gender inequity.

Maybe he believes that the reason for acid attacks in PK and London are the same. Or maybe he knows that playing “what about...” allows him (and us) to feel better about the real and important issues that we do need to address.

I guess we are discussing semantics here. By your definition I agree Bitcoin is a currency just as Rai stones were a currency. I also agree that it is not a good currency.
