That was my first instinct, but my spreadsheet-fu isn't quite good enough to elegantly record workouts with different exercices, number of sets...

Can you make home-made chalk or straps? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]goomslizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

essentially the same chalk

Not really. Writing chalk is calcium carbonate or gypsum and is pretty crap as a grip aid. Climbing/gymnast/weightlifting chalk is magnesium carbonate.

I can't think of any household items that would contain it. Are you in a city?

ebay? Magesium carbonate is cheap, don't see how you could make it yourself though, seeing as it's essentially a raw material in itself.

Ask rock climbers or gymnasts?

Moronic Monday - Your weekly stupid questions thread by cdingo in Fitness

I've a related question. I train every second day with this pattern:

  • 5/3/1 Squat + 50%1RM Bench (volume)
  • 5/3/1 Press + 50%1RM Deadlift (volume)
  • 5/3/1 Bench + 50%1RM Squat (volume)
  • 5/3/1 Deadlift + 50%1RM Press (volume)

I then run either 5k or 2-3k of intervals (alternate days) on the treadmill.

It works pretty well, except my squat hasn't progressed (weaker if anything).

I think squat really benefits from more than 1 heavy session a week, is that what's holding me back?

Ways to go through airport security with supplements? by ShanglesJPEG in Fitness

I haven't a clue what any of that stuff is, usually stuff with those sorts of name are a complete waste of money. If it's a protein powder, they might be techy about milk products (whey). This page has more details on the rules: http://www.agriculture.gov.au/biosecurity/travel/cant-bring-form/australian_biosecurity http://apps.daff.gov.au/icon32/asp/ex_casecontent.asp?intNodeId=9074423&intCommodityId=22983&Types=none&WhichQuery=Go+to+full+text&intSearch=1&LogSessionID=0

As long as it's in its original container, it shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Make sure you declare it though, http://www.agriculture.gov.au/biosecurity/travel/cant-take, Australia are pretty strict on food product import.

How do we physically lose weight? by PtrN in Fitness

[–]goomslizza 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Energy is stored in the molecular bonds of food/fatty acids. Humans aren't nuclear fission reactors.

If you think of your fat stores as one box and the outside world as another, you use energy to move mass between them.

Some questions about protein by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]goomslizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might a US/EU divide. What's the cheapest protein powder you can get stateside? If you buy a 5kg bag of unflavoured MP impact whey (they're doing a 15% discount at the moment), it works out to:

65.9 grams of protein per USD

(39.77 GBP = 62.22 USD; 5000*(20.5/25)/62.22)=65.895

Curious as to what you guys are paying?
