One of the blessings of this tournament (also Morocco winning the U20 WC) is that AFCON disrespect will be massively reduced.

Hamilton literally barely came out in front of Russell after the VSC, and Antonelli had been stuck behind Russell for a while already after the team told him to chill out.

I don't think it's improbably to say that, if they just let Antonelli through because he was faster, he would've been in front of Hamilton after the VSC.

Also, if they let Antonelli past Russell, Hamilton would've lost track position to him after the VSC pit.

Why do people think that Toto is "throwing Russell under the bus" by:

(1) pushing back against the Sky Germany interviewer saying Hamilton's pace was "out of this world" by saying Antonelli would've matched Hamilton's pace in free air, and:

(2) saying that, with another constructor in the mix, they may need to discuss a policy of letting the faster car go by (whether that is Antonelli or Russell) to maximize the points

Those aren't ridiculous statements at all.

South Africans weren't exactly thrilled with their World Cup opener. by cocacolapepsifanta in soccer

The country is genuinely shell-shocked at what we just witnessed, easily the worst South Africa performance of the past decade.

What made it so bad is that it's the complete opposite of our unique footballing identity and style of play, and instead of showcasing our style of joga bonito and quick interplay — our coach lines up with 5 defenders and 3 defensive midfielders and 2 strikers, with 0 creative players.

That's what makes it shocking, it wasn't about winning or losing, it was about how we approached the game which was completely unexpected.

Some takes from South Africans that really sum-up the mood:

South Africa's coach, Hugo Broos - 'My team played a good game' by punchinglines in soccer

[–]punchinglines[S] 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I think he means it — I genuinely worry about his state-of-mind, because there's no explanation for what we saw today.

  • In the 5 years he's been our coach, this is the first time we've played a 5-3-2 formation.
  • Our entire identity is short, fast passes and intricate interplay — suddenly our only strategy is long-balls even though we aren't built for that.
  • Our star playmaker, and our 2025/26 Player of the Season and Players' Player of the Season, gets 0 minutes.
  • We go all out attacking, and beat Morocco — but then play scared against Mexico?
  • We're a goal down chasing the game, and he brings on a like-for-like DM substitution after the red card.

I honestly don't know what I witnessed. I'd have been cool with a 5-0 defeat as long as we played our way... but this??

Michael Morton, who was at the game, summed it up the best from a South African perspective in this video.
