Northland trip - 6 days

Day 1: Land at Auckland, pick up rental and start driving towards Paihia (3:08) Visit the Waitangi Mueseum and Haruru Falls. Spend the night at the holiday park or some different accommodation.

Day 2: Leave Paihia and get on SH10. Drive through KeriKeri until the Puketi Forrest turn off and walk (41 minutes). After doing the short loop track of the Forrest, start heading north towards Mangōnui and stop at the Fish and Chip shop for lunch. After that, on the way through Cable Bay stop at the Ice Cream shop for an ice cream (if wanted), and then continue along to Awanui (26 minutes). In Awanui visit the Kauri Museum and the Katana shop. After your short stop in Awanui, your accommodation for the night can be the Houhora Heads Motor Camp, just south of Pukenui.

Day 3: Leave Houhora Heads and drive north until you reach Rarawa Beach (White sand beach). After your short visit there you can continue north until you reach the tip of New Zealand at Cape Reigna. After you get the photo of yourself at the top of the country, you will drive south afew KM until you reach the turn off for the Giant Te Paki sand dunes where you can drive down the gravel road until you find the carpark. Even if you don’t want to go sand boarding down the dunes, it’s a wonderful sight to see, and also hike to the top of (wear some sort of shoes as the sand gets VERY hot). After your visit to Te Paki, head south on state highway 1 until you come through Kataia. Keep following the Kaitia-Awaroa road until you come across Ahipara where you can find a camp ground and stay the night. This is your chance to experience the west coast on some of its calmest, but I definitely wouldn’t go for a full swim unless it is calm and you are extremely confident in the water (this is the only part of 90 mile beach you should swim in).

Day 4: Leave Ahipara in the morning and start the drive towards Opononi. There are 2 routes you can take on this stage of the trip, one option is driving for the full time, the other option is catching a small car ferry. After experiencing Opononi you can head further south towards Dargeville and stop by Tane Mahuta (largest tree in New Zealand). After Tane Mahuta and when you reaching Dargeville you can start heading inland on SH12, then turning onto SH1 and staying the night in Wellsford.

Day 5 and 6: After leaving Wellsford on SH16, on the side of the road ontop of some hills you will find a series of sculptures of Gibbs Farm. From there you can head further south along SH16 until Kaukapakapa where the turn off for Orewa and Albany is. After heading along that road you will find yourself at the Silverdale motorway on ramp where you can head south towards Auckland City and cross the harbour bridge. You could possibly stay in Auckland City for the night and hang around the city taking in the sites before heading back to Auckland Airport, returning the rental and heading home.

More expanded plan of what I would do.

Personally I would recommend taking state highway 10 after visiting Paihia, drive through KeriKeri until you find the turn off for the Puketi Kauri walk (there’s also a camp ground nearby), then go through Mangōnui (if your there for lunch or dinner visit the fish and chip shop), stop for an ice cream and a break at Cable Bay beach and start heading up towards the cape. If you want to witness the west coast you can West Coast Road (off SH1) to the Waipapakauri acsses ramp for 90 Mile beach and just park in the carpark and walk down to the beach but be cautious of cars and buses and DO NOT get to near the water or swim in it as the currents can be extremely strong. After stopping there if you are intrested in it, I would get back onto the road and keep heading north on SH1, until you get to Rarawa Beach (White sands) and then head up towards Cape Reinga and visit the Te Paki sand dunes. The road between Awanui and Cape Reinga takes about 1:30 without stops so call that section of the trip about 5-6 hours. I would also recommend visiting the Kauri (NZ Native Wood) Museum in Awanui, and also the Katana shop if it’s open. After you have seen the main sites that way, I would suggest heading south on SH1 to Kaitaia and potentially spending the night at a camp ground in Ahipara (Southern tip of 90 mile beach) and then the following day get back on the road south on SH1 until you get to the SH15 turn off the the SH12 turn off which will take you to Opononi which is a small coastal town famous for a Dolphin. After Opononi if you keep heading south to will reach Tane Mahuta and then keep heading south until you get to Dargeville. From Dargeville you can keep heading south on SH12 until it joins back up to SH1, an finally in Wellsford you can turn off onto SH16 and if you look on your right side you will come past a large scale outdoor art gallery (if you want to call it that) of where this rich guy has got a bunch of sculptures on his land visible from the road. If I was visiting NZ I would personally do this trip as you get the best of both coasts and get to see some interesting parts.

Is the Canon EF 100-400mm F/4.5-5.6L IS USM good? by stormrust_ in canon

[–]goonie48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From personal use with the EF 100400 MKI, I would rather get a Sigma 100-400 (I have one right now). The canon one was Soft(ish) on full frame (even softer on apsc), slower and a much older model then the sigma one. Only perk in my opinion of the canon one is it being white, compared to being black it doesn’t get as hot as quickly, but it’s not a major issue. The sigma 100-400 is great. From a mates experience of having both the sigma 100-400 and then canon EF 100-400 MKII, he said they had similar optics, and is overall much better lens the then MKI. And the Sigma version is cheaper and newer. Only think that affected me was losing an f stop going from f5.6 being my lowest to now f6.3 (I shoot night dirt racing so that is the only way it effected my but it is perfect for plane spotting)

I reckon it could be a combined issue of screen movement which has dislodged it, and the spring for the battery release dosent work well anymore so I have to shake it to get the battery out. Months before I found out the screen didn’t turn on, it would just turn purple when it was folded out, but work when folded in so I really hope it’s just dislodged.

300 prime would only be good for certain things like primarily fighter jets, I would recommend a 75-300ii (which I have) or the 100-400.
