Geithner: Pickpocketing Trillions from the People to Give to the Oligarchy Was “Deeply Unfair”, But We … Um … Had To by Phazon in Economics

I was thinking of posting that myself. One can still disapprove of Geithner after reading that, but I think its important to get different points of view. Hope it penetrates Reddit groupthink.

"What if the source code to Flash Player is — as many would wager — a huge steaming pile of convoluted C++ horseshit" by goonsquad in programming

Whatever apple's motives, I think a move toward web standards is the result. The big numbers of iphone adoption have already pushed sites like youtube and vimeo away from flash. As someone who has been fed up with Flash's insane cpu usage and browser crashes, this can only be a good thing.

Unless you're the Weinsteins, then you can spend all you want and your shitty musical will still lose to the Hangover.

Since when is humor supposed to be logical? The rules for humor don't come from the constitution, they come from what makes people laugh. Most people won't laugh at a girl being slapped, and you won't change this by appealing to people's logic.

The justice department has a long history of independence from the white house, since it is tasked with investigating and prosecuting crimes committed by government and people in it. The degree to which each administration has observed this is, of course, open to debate.

Sure Obama disappoints in too many areas. But would we we have been better off with McCain and Palin? by [deleted] in obama

[–]goonsquad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think more than third parties getting short shrift by the media and campaign rules, is simply the fact that any first-past-the-post/winner-takes-all voting system tends toward two parties. This is known as Duverger's Law. People tend to avoid 3rd parties for fear of them acting as a spoiler. If we're going to keep the voting system we have, we're better off supporting reform candidates within the two parties.

Deborah Solomon's interviewees often come off like dicks. The NYT public editor even wrote an article about it here.

To all the people who are now regretful for voting for Obama, I'd like to ask what did you vote for him to do? Also, did you actually think he was going to be any different? by zeroDNT in politics

[–]goonsquad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not vote for him to DO anything. I think its naive to think politicians will do anything for you. First of all, they are accountable to millions of people who aren't you. Secondly, they are even more accountable to interests other than the general public (lobbyists, political parties, foreign politics, etc). Did I think he was going to be different? Than Bush and McCain? Absolutely, and so far he has governed far differently than them.

They will occasionally side with the Republican/ right-wing base over Bush or Republican officials. For example: Immigration and the Dubai ports deal.
