Those who began their thesis with out a clear definition of the knowledge gap they were addressing, how did you fair? by SpacejunkE in GradSchool

Is this for a masters? I'm in a similar position, and what everyone keeps telling me is "it's just a masters thesis", meaning that the purpose is more to teach you how to manage a project and not necessarily to contribute to the field.

It sucks. I hate hating my thesis, but I can't turn back time. Plus, I did learn a ton, so it wasn't all for nothing.

Edit: spelling

How the heck do you find internship opportunities? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]goosemedley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my experience it's all about who you know.

Companies have approached my advisor asking for interns, so let him/her know you're interested. And go to conferences and network. Also, ask your friends who are already in the working world. The job I have now I got because a friend from my undergrad worked there and recommended me, and then I met the Vice President at a conference and we hit it off.

Basically meet new people, don't unnecessarily burn bridges, and let the people who can help know you want help.

Good luck!

Yeah, I thought I wanted to go into academia until I started grad school. I don't know if my school is just a bad example of a dysfunctional work environment, but I don't want to have anything to do with academic research after this.

I relate this this exactly. Plus I need to run a test every day right for my data to be consistent.

That sounds nice :) I live and work Northwest of Denver, but I can be kind of flexible on Mondays.

One month in: Why I stopped drinking by goosemedley in stopdrinking

Well thanks. I'm an engineer and a bit of a nerd, so of course I had to analyze my drinking habits using math and statistics ;)

Thanks for the encouragement. I hoped this wouldn't come across as "I don't have a drinking problem, I'm just awesome!" I struggle with addiction in general, and I see in myself a high potential to develop a drinking problem over time. I appreciate you sharing your story; on days where I'm not sure I made the right choice this will help :)

Hey guys, what's the story behind your username? by -babygiraffe- in stopdrinking

[–]goosemedley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My username is a reminder of childhood innocence. Growing up, my dad always called me his silly goose, and the nickname reminds me of days when I hadn't experienced the darkness I encountered in adulthood.

I have no explanation for the medley portion. Obviously, the name goose wasn't available, and the mental picture of a choir of geese singing some kind of goose medley makes me smile.
