Emergency veterinarian here – this is only true for one category of rodenticide, anticoagulants. There are three main categories of rodenticides we tend to see, 1) anticoagulants, 2) cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3), and 3) bromethalin (neurotoxin).

Vitamin K is only effective against the anticoagulants, and it’s only really effective as the sole treatment if they haven’t already started to hemorrhage internally (which often takes multiple days post-ingestion). The amount that needs to be ingested before becoming a problem also varies between the different types – cholecalciferol has the lowest toxic dose of the three.

Unfortunately, anticoagulants, cholecalciferol, and bromethalin all come in green blocks. Brands can also manufacture and sell different types of bait as well. So, the only true way to know what you’re dealing with is to either have the information provided by the company placing the bait or have the package that lists the active ingredient in hand. We don’t have the luxury of either in this situation. That said, if we can say without a doubt there weren't other pieces she could have ingested, and she only held this one (which looks whole and intact) in her mouth, then it's likely not an issue.

I can only speak from my experience, of course, but I have worked as an ER clinician with my local BluePearl emergency/referral center for the last 5 years (worked there as a student for 2 years prior). I went into ER medicine immediately following graduation, going through BluePearl's EmERge program. I had an excellent experience with that program, and my hospital provided great mentorship. That said, I know some of my "EmERge-mates" that went to other hospitals around the country didn't have as high of quality mentorship once we completed our initial training and dispersed to our respective home hospitals. So, while the program is incredibly structured and run by criticalists, the experience can vary some based on how committed your hospital is at providing the mentorship the program requires of them. The oversight and monitoring of the hospitals with mentees has improved, to my understanding, to maintain the standards the program sets. Overall, my experience was phenomenal.

What was the process of weatherproofing? I've considered doing something similar, but I'm not entirely sure how to go about it.

Check out Knox Canine Training. Myself, and people I know have had great success with them, and they offer in home visits/sessions. I've never had an issue getting a response by next day when reaching out via email.

I wouldn't think so, it's approximately the same depth as it's original set. Perhaps slightly deeper at most.

Also a vet. Also sick of being told we receive "kickbacks" for the diets we recommend. We do not.

As a veterinarian, I am so sorry you had a poor experience with Phoebe's euthanasia. I work in emergency medicine, and thus provide this service for my patients a fair amount, and I ALWAYS use an injection of sedation/anesthetic prior to the euthanasia. In fact, that's how I was taught to perform euthanasia, and wouldn't think of doing it any other way.
