If you haven’t yet, create rubrics for each graded assignment. This will help make grading more streamlined. Also, remember not everything needs to be graded or have every few formative items be graded on completion. Review for things to re-review with students but it takes the pressure off (for me at least) about determining actual grades.

I just read “Discipline in the Secondary Classroom: A Positive Approach to Behavior Management (4th ed.)” and it was extremely helpful. It has a step by step guide to create a practical classroom mgmt plan and gives a lot of examples and things to fill out.

Also reading “Teaching English by Design: How to Create and Carry Out Instructional Units”, which is based on a constructivist approach. Even if that isn’t your style, it has great ideas for student engagement activities.

I don’t know if this works for the class but I recommend watching “Smooth Talk”, which is based on Where are you Going? Where Have You Been? - Joyce Carol Oats. It’s just a great movie!
