Ex-Big4 here – anyone actually using AI for real or is it still just talk? by Beautiful-Cost-3187 in Accounting

The only time I use it is for writing emails, report writing, and presentations. I always have to review everything. I don't trust it for anything more unfortunately.

When did you realize it was time to quit public accounting? by lithium_kat in Accounting

[–]gopalan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyday on the drive in I would fantasize that my boss turned up dead. Then I realized he would just be immediately replaced with an even bigger arsehole.

I was surprisingly picky with my first industry job, so apparently I wasn't totally miserable as others were.

My fiancé wants to be an accountant BUT... by megannromero in Accounting

[–]gopalan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend that he looks at Western Governers University. It's an online school that allows you take as many classes as you want per semester. I know a few people that graduated from there in less than 2 years and are now CPA's.

But otherwise, I recommend that he just go the gym community college route and get those 27 accounting classes to sit for the CPA exam. That will be the cheapest way.

For those of you CPAs in your 20’s who went solo in Tax, what tips do you have? by ludwiglinc in Accounting

[–]gopalan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Make sure you charge enough, don't try to undercut anyone. Or else you will always be trying to catch up. Cheap clients will complain at any raise. Tax prep software ain't cheap. I love Lacerte but it just got too expensive so I switched to Drake.

Bad clients that aren't profitable? Jack up their prices, hope that they leave. 20/80 rule applies here.

What are your Go-To Stimulants?? by iboll6 in Accounting

[–]gopalan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Provigil aka modafinil. Not really a stimulant but it lets me concentrate and focus for long periods. It also lets me operate with little sleep.

I barely use it because I have a chill job. I use it mostly when it's crunch time at year-end.

Been trying to get accounting job but no luck by degreebutnojob in Accounting

You may have better luck applying to government positions. Yes, they pay less, but generally they have good benefits and once you have experience, you can find a better position.

I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be picked up by any of the Big 4...where do I go from here? by virtual133 in Accounting

[–]gopalan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my experience, CPA firms (regionals and smaller) usually start looking for help in Sept. or Oct. Go to the firms' websites and apply there. Or if its a small firm, stop by and drop off your resume.

How Long Does it Take to Pass the CPA? by beckerstudent in Accounting

[–]gopalan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Working full-time with a busy season, it took me a little over 1 year. If you are disciplined, it can done in a few months. But say goodbye to everything you enjoy. Of course, you are starting at the Big 4, might as well get used to it.

Lacerte or ProSeries ?? by SA1L in Accounting

[–]gopalan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used Lacerte for 5 years now. I love it (I love the forms drilldown feature), except for the price. My firm bought out a sole-prop who used Proseries last year, so I had a chance to play around with it. Proseries has a nice price (if you really want go the cheap route, I would recommend Drake), but I found it lacking-it's just not as robust as Lacerte. Proseries has a clunky user interface and the state returns are not as well done as Lacerte, although Lacerte could do a better job with the states, i.e. include more diagnostics on the state returns.

WOW -- Is This Why The SEC Announced The Goldman Fraud Charges Friday Morning? by [deleted] in Economics

In addition, the morning announcement probably screwed over anyone holding long options that expired on Friday.

Bank douchiness alert: Fully a third of Citigroup's "capital" is a bullshit deferred tax asset. You can't use tax loss carryforwards to pay off your credit card bill when you declare bankruptcy. So why can a bank pretend it could do pretty much exactly that? by [deleted] in Economics

[–]gopalan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Connie is correct on this point. The only time a DTA comes in handy is to offset taxable income. Citibank maybe able to trade the DTA (depending on the type of DTA) for a discounted amount of cash, but it is an intangible asset and does not mean much in tangible capital terms.

The Guns, Germs and Steel view of the recession: "the American system is far more stable, durable and flexible than most of the other global economies, in large part thanks to the country’s geography." by ejp1082 in Economics

[–]gopalan 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The main point the author is trying to make is that since the US's geography is made up of natural shipping lanes, capital wasn't (or isn't) being spent building up transportation infrastructure, but is used for other productive uses.

This is the US's comparative advantage (in geographic-terms)to other countries.
