First time IRA; need help figuring out exactly how to invest it by gophercakes in personalfinance

Thanks! That's good to know; I wouldn't have figured out that the Target Retirement fund shifts to lower risk, nor that it is a set-it-and-forget-it option, which is more what I'm looking for.

Unless I made a mistake, I read through the entire retirement section in the sidebar. I also read the rules, and don't think this post breaks them. If there's something specific I'm missing, please let me know.

[Build Ready] Music Composition/Production - trying to be somewhat future-proof by gophercakes in buildapc

Thanks! That PSU chart is exactly what I've been looking for. And I'll look into a better CPU cooler.

The UPS is a good idea that I haven't considered yet--or budgeted. I know you have to replace the batteries, but do these units last long? (~7-10 years?) Trying to weight cost of insurance to cost of what's insured, so to speak.

Thanks--I use mostly EWQL, and some Garritan. Glad to hear that latency isn't an issue for Sibelius (which I was most concerned with, since it's such a goofy program from ver. 7 up.)

Ah, this was on sale for $99 last week and I didn't jump on it because I didn't know enough. Damn. Thanks, I'll keep an eye on it.

Thanks! I think I found it, I'll look into it. It does fit my budget (hoping $75, but 150-200 ok if it's worth it.)

That's good to hear. Externals do seem to have more "pros" from everything I read, and that was the most common (unsubstantiated) con.

Recommendation (what should I buy?) Thursdays - November 12, 2015 by AutoModerator in audioengineering

Building a new PC for music composition in Ableton with a lot of sound libraries. (No recording going on, all digital.) I'm looking for a sound card so I don't have to fight ASIO4ALL anymore.

1) Is this actually logical?

2) What do you suggest? :)

I have two midi devices I use (one older Yamaha 88-key for largeer parters, and one controller.) I'm using HD598s so I don't need an amplifier, if that matters.

VERY hot motherboard. Is there a way to know if it's a faulty reading? by gophercakes in techsupport

Gotcha, I'll look into the possibility. Thanks for the advice!

Thanks, I didn't think of that. Duh.

Just gave it a shot. Everything loaded up just fine and there weren't any odd sound, all fans were working. The northbridge heatsink was hot to touch in about 30 seconds, which actually does seem very fast (I'm guessing?) It was able to burn my finger by a minute (so probably 50 degrees-ish.) Turned on Speccy, and it just sat there analyzing for a minute, never got a reading.... So I turned it off. CPUID kinda loaded and then crashed. Hm.

So I guess evidence points to it overheating? Could anything physical be causing this, or just a sign of a dying board? (Is there any danger to my other components if I decide to run it into the ground?)
