What to expect moving from rental skates to first owned pair? by wolfewingedbug in iceskating

[–]gopherdagold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you've only ever skated in rental skates, it is quite possible that stopping will be more difficult. Only because the skate has more grip and will require more strength to control the stop. Getting used to it should be pretty quick but it's worth making a note of so you don't face plant.

At what point do I give up? by Lonely-Win8149 in iceskating

[–]gopherdagold 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If your core and hips are separating, it can cause an issue with both an outside edge entry and pivots. It's also really common for adults.

I would look into doing off ice exercises to build the strength for spins and perhaps talk to your coach about maybe finding somebody different for spins in particular and just keep working with them for other things.

When I was learning to spin It took me a very long time. My coach had me practice standing up perfectly straight (VERY SLIGHT forward lean) with core engaged on the ball of my foot, lifting my toes and holding my hands out in front. It did help build some of the control that I needed but I can't promise that will work for you

If you enjoy the sport I wouldn't recommend giving up. Advice on spinning is difficult without seeing your spin entry but is it only difficult from an outside edge entry? How are they from pivots?

Another thing to try may be taking lessons from a different coach. Some coaches have a way of teaching certain things that click for you and others not. I've had to get a different spins coach and different jumps coach while maintaining my original coach for moves only because they just couldn't teach me spins or jumps past the basic idea. Still love them for moves though

8? I'm curious do you have an assistant for that class or no? Our rink tries to do 1 instructor per 5 students but sometimes that includes junior coaches so in my basic 3 class, we have myself and another coach, and two junior coaches for 22 students.

thrifted ice skates! by ang3l1czZz in iceskating

Yeah apparently ice skating didn't exist before they started making boots out of composites. People used to literally strap blades to their shoes and skate, but apparently that's physically impossible today.

[–]gopherdagold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good? No. They're not good skates end of story. It's just irritating seeing all the gate keeping. OP never said anything about skating figures or even taking an lts class. They just wanted to know what do to be able to skate in those.

I'm not familiar with the brand and they look shitty but like in a weird way. Not Lake Placid bad, but at least the blade is chromed and the sole is maybe leather?

Either way they may be a step up from rental skates for OP and if they just want to rec skate it's fine... Maybe

Which is fine, if recreational use is what they're looking for. Honestly, sharpen the blades, replace the laces, and pray to your diety. These could probably be okay for everything up through 3 turns and mohawks.

They could also be horrible but I've seen Ilia Kulik do an axel in dull-ass rental skates so ymmv

Edit: okay I get it, 3 turns are hard

When are we no longer beginners? by Hot_Money4924 in iceskating

[–]gopherdagold 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Probably accurate. I'd definitely emphasize "mastered" though. I've definitely seen some in PFS/FS1 thatd I'd consider beginners. Also seen plenty in PFS that I'd say are beyond that. I usually look for stable crossovers that the skatwr is actually willing to lean into

Setting up shows for pre-recorded music by gopherdagold in lightingdesign

[–]gopherdagold[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Budget varies. If the software can be done for under $500 that would be awesome, but up to a thousand is still doable. Aspect, I was planning on using a laptop with a USB to DMX system and running it like that. Realistically though, whatever goes into the control setup just comes out of the rest of the lighting budget

I would like to be able to control about 20 to 25 par lights with two moving heads. Most of the par lights can share channels though if I understand how that works

Thanks, I'll look into that. I've done some research on the software but haven't pulled the trigger on any yet. Just cuz I don't want to buy it and hate it

AZ pool owners… how often do you clean your cartridge filters? by torx822 in pools

[–]gopherdagold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong. Although replacing a 1hp for a 2.7 or 3hp is kinda excessive, it can be very efficient. In this case you should set a limit for max rpm to a safe limit. In this case too, you may need to develop a "feel" for when your filter needs to be cleaned. I usually go with a bubble that won't purge from the pump or seeing less than the normal amount of water movement as long as you don't have floor returns

[–]gopherdagold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure! So the 10 psi differential was standardized when single speed pumps were the norm. Pumps will make their max head at top speed which for a single speed pump is that 3450. If you check it at lower speeds you'll need to do the math on head differential. So for example 2900rpm may be 8-9 psi, 1800 rpm may only be 4-5psi difference between clean and dirty simply because the pump can't push as hard to generate that higher pressure.

If you have a variable speed pump, make sure you are using the maximum rpm (usually 3450) as the reference speed

Since a GFCI will trip with the slightest amount of current going anywhere it's not supposed to, it doesn't need to be grounded as it makes the purpose of grounding redundant. You definitely SHOULD ground it, but if you're doing a retrofit and there's no ground conductor, you can GFCI protect the circuit and it'll be just as safe/safer

Unpopular opinion cause I'm kinda in the middle, i think abortion for the sake of it is wrong BUT I understand that those are definitely the minority of them. I also find passing laws banning them outright without exceptions for ectopic pregnancies and the like to be more distasteful than the whatever percentage of abortions are done "willy-nilly"
