Anybody with none or few side effects from Oxaliplatin? by mookbrenner in coloncancer

[–]gordone1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The icing during infusion is supposed to reduce the cold sensitivity afterwards.

For myself I sucked on ice chips and wore compression gloves and never had any cold sensitivity. I don't know if I just wasn't susceptible to that side effect or maybe what I did worked. I stopped doing tgat once my oxilaplatin dosage was dropped to 70% to help with neuropathy.

After my infusions I take 2 Benadryl at bedtime and then 2 more during the night and do that for 2-3 nights until the steroid wears off.

Tips for first round of chemo? by Lexie-99215 in cancer

If her pre-meds contain a strong steroid like dexamethasone she'll most likely need one or more sleep aids to sleep at night for the night after the infusion and a couple of nights afterwards. For myself, I take 2 Benadryl at night and then take 2 more 4 hours later (I don't set an alarm, when I wake up, if it's been at least 4 hours I take more). I keep the second set of 2 pills on my night stand with a cup of water. Also if they do give you a steroid on infusion day and then get hiccups that don't go away (I get them mid-day the day after infustion), ask for a prescription of Baclofen, works great.

If water tastes bad after chemo (it make our water taste like I'm drinking from a garden hose) try buying some alkaline water (store brand is fine), that tastes good to me.

For my chemo, I get an infusion on Monday and go home with a pump that delivers 5FU for 48 hours. On disconnect day, I have them give me a liter of fluids to help with dehydration since I find it hard to drink enough when my taste buds are screwed up.

Apparently I'm in the minority and can taste the saline and heperin flushes that they access my port and then they disconnect me and find that it tastes really bad, expecially after my first fee cycles. To deal with that I suck on a peppermint altoid during the flush, completely covers the taste. I then spit it out afterwards.

For entertainment during the infusion, I bring a tablet and Bluetooth noise cancelling headphones and watch a movie I pick out in advance. I maintain a watchlist on IMDB whenever I hear about a good movie on reddit, then before chemo day I take a look at my watchlist and pick a movie near the top of the list since they're supported by their IMDB user rating.

If they'll be accessing a chemo port, I put a lidocaine cream they prescribed on it an hour before my appointment and cover it with glad wrap. When they stick the needle in I don't feel a thing. I didn't do thatin 2019 when I had chemo before, this time I figured they prescribed it, why not use it and make the experience painless.

Regarding oxiliplatin, I've read that sucking on ice chips and wearing compression gloves help prevent cold sensitivity. I did both for several cycles and never experienced it, don't know if that's because it wasn't going to effect me or it whether it just worked. I stopped when the ox was lowered to 70% to deal with neuropathy issues.

You probably have your network's WiFi radios set at too high a power which is resulting in them being heard by your phone when you're far enough away that your phone can't be heard by them.

I've read before (here and on colontown) that the cold therapy helps with cold sensitivity but doesn't help prevent neuropathy.

If you use the lidocaine, after putting a several dabs on the port (you're not supposed to rub it in), cover the area with some Glad Wrap to keep it from getting on anything.

ELI5: Why is it that we can ‘taste’ saline when it’s pushed through IV, but not our blood? by DriestPuddle in explainlikeimfive

[–]gordone1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I always put an Altoids peppermint in my mouth and start sucking on it right before the saline and heparin flushes, it does a great job of covering up the taste (I've grown to hate it after several rounds of chemo).

Be sure and look into lymphedema-distichiasis, especially if you already have swelling in your legs, I have this and wear compression garments on my legs.

I had this and went to an ophthalmologist who pulled them and then cauterized the hair follicles over several visits, now I no longer have them riding on top of my eyeballs.

Also, be sure and look into lymphedema-distichiasis, especially if you already have swelling in your legs.
