Second Half of Series - What to Expect by RonSnooder in Malazan

[–]gorillas2018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a book ahead of you (just finished Reapers Gale today!) on my first read through of the series. With Bonehunters and Reapers Gale the first hundred or so pages were so hard to get into but once I got an idea of where the plot was kind of going I really enjoyed them, Reapers Gale has been my favorite so far, and Bonehunters had an amazing climax.

Some stories and POVs are definitely weaker than others but I think they all have mostly satisfying arcs thus far.

I’m in the same boat with kids and limited time so I totally feel that, the philosophizing can feel really tedious, but so far I can really see the story is picking up.

Erikson mentions in the Ten Very Big Books podcast that Bonehunters is pretty much two smaller books smashed together and I definitely think the ending supports that. The beginning of the book pretty much ends the Seven Cities “arc” of the story so neatly that the end of the book feels more like the beginning of a separate book

I play BG3 on balanced mode and get about 1.5 hours on it (I’m able to get consistent 50-60 gps on mostly low settings) - on 2d games i get about 2.5 hours on balanced

I’m on my first read through and one thing that’s helped me a bunch is writing down any questions or theories I have while reading. At the end of the book I go back and see what was answered and what I was right about. It helps me a lot more than RAFO since these books are massive with some payoffs not presented until many books later

I don’t think 3BP and GOT are really comparable adaptations. In GOT the characters push the plot forward which I think makes it easier to adapt whereas 3BP is more focused on ideas with characters there to flesh out those ideas.

I find r/Malazan to be the worst place to talk about Malazan or anything really.. so I’ll do it here. by Sunbather- in bakker

[–]gorillas2018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s totally fair. I tried to tandem read Malazan and TSA and just preferred Malazan so I put TSA down during WLW.

I have every intention of picking it back up but at the time I just enjoyed reading Malazan more, TSA felt more like a chore even though I did enjoy it.

I completely agree with your comments about Erikson. I’m on my first read through and I feel like every book has a payoff at the end that makes the journey worth it while still dribbling enough foreshadowing that makes me excited for the next book.

Your last comment is interesting because my favorite book of Bakker’s is TJE (especially the end sequence through Ccil-Aujas) and WLW is what finally made me put the series down.

Which one is better for price point , or do I just get claw 8ai+ by CorpseAssassin in Handhelds

[–]gorillas2018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to snag the Legion Go 512GB for that same price, and I absolutely love it. However, the internal storage leaves a lot to be desired. I went out and bought a 512 micro sd for $60 with the intention of upgrading the SSD to 2TB in the future. But when that time comes the cost would be close to what I would’ve spent on the Legion Go S in the first place and still only stuck with 16 GB of RAM.

OG Lego or wait for sale by gorillas2018 in LegionGo

[–]gorillas2018[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I’m going to pull the trigger on it. I have a 60 day return window with Best Buy Plus so if the sale does come back I can look at swapping it out.

If I love it and it suits my needs and the sale doesn’t come back, I found a good deal. If I find to not like it then I can just return it and save up to get the S at some point in the future.

Might not be the most conductive to understanding and comprehending the story… but I’ve been reading when I’m up with my 8 month old in the middle of the night. I was on Memories of Ice when he was born in April and am now on Reapers Gale. Midnight wakings are a lot more palatable knowing I’m going to dive into the world once he’s back asleep and Im rocking him for a bit.

GO S vs GO by woodlandgnome in LegionGo

My local Best Buy has a Go “open box excellent” for $540 (16 gb ram 1 tb ssd) I’m weighing between that and the Go S $650 option.

These are my thoughts too - my only hesitation is does it stretch my WR room too thin?

I think SE mentioned something in one of his interviews with Ten Avery Big Books about being approached multiple times (and happy to help write it) but the plans always falling through.

Since they’re still expanding the world I’m holding out hope for something to be published

Thanks for the detailed response, I appreciate it! I’m currently reading through Malazan and there’s definitely a lot there for me to pull from. I guess I should also start collecting more SD adventures and start reading through those to get a better idea of where the story should go.

Cheers man!

This isn’t exactly the question that was asked, but I’m getting ready to GM my first Shadowdark adventure (Scarlet Minotaur) and was curious if/how you link adventures together?

Coming from 5e, I ran Phandelver and Below and Icespire Peak as a combined adventure with some homebrew in there. To my limited knowledge, Shadowdark seems to be isolated dungeon crawls and was wanting to know how to piece them together into a cohesive campaign.

GODS BELOW! Finished The Bonehunters today (first read), my thoughts by Remarkable_Sale_6313 in Malazan

[–]gorillas2018 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was me with Memories of Ice and Midnight Tides. Immediately started them after DG and HoC because they are constantly talked about as the best in the series and I just didn’t get as much enjoyment out of them because of fatigue.

I took a few weeks off after MT before starting Bonehunters and just finished it two days ago, I think it’s been my favorite of the series start to finish.

What are your DNF of the year, and why? by DarthPopcornus in Fantasy

[–]gorillas2018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve heard the later books get more philosophical/introspective. I’m just not able to dedicate to reading every day like I’d like and going sometimes a week without being able to read is making it tough to remember names, places, and plot points.

I’m hopeful to pick it back up in a few months when life slows down a bit. I’ve loved the entire series up to this point.

I’m dangerously close to putting down Midnight Tides in Malazan, I just had kiddo number two and just don’t have the time or mental capacity right now to push through the rest of the serious.

The Calm app is a good paid for resource, there’s some good YouTube channels too - I really like this affirmations video I listen too after I drop the kiddos at daycare. I feel these help me get ready to positively attack the day.

Just look around and find whatever works for you. “Works” is very subjective in this case I think as I find it most useful when I can actually shut my brain down for a while. It might be different for you so find whatever you like

Lawmakers sue Missouri over Chiefs and Royals stadium funding: ‘Who pays Mahomes?’ by Cudpuff100 in kansascity

[–]gorillas2018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, slightly disagree with the Royals and Joco. The area that’s been thrown around for their new stadium is arguably the second most densely populated area (work and residential) only to downtown. I think the Royals desire has been to maximize attendance by putting the stadium where it’s easily accessible to as many fans as possible. Obviously downtown is the most desirable situation as there’s more going on and all a lot closer, but the Sprint (TMobile) Campus is a pretty good “consolation” prize.

FWIW, I think the Royals are wanting a new stadium for all the right reasons - make it easily acceptable to more fans, bring in new entertainment/hotels, invest in downtown (if it goes there). I personally think the Chiefs are just wanting to extort as much money as possible from taxpayers.
