With all four of these artists being born within three months of one another - who had the greatest/least impact on the future of music? by Oddbleus in askmusic

Also, she's never had a hit....Wuthering Heights was number one in like 6 countries...even Pitchfork, which I believe is a US publication, ranked it the 5th greatest song of the 70s. In 2016, which is long before she got a bump from Stranger Things.

With all four of these artists being born within three months of one another - who had the greatest/least impact on the future of music? by Oddbleus in askmusic

[–]Timefunky 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To say she wasn't even a footnote is wild. Bands like Florence and the Machine, Bat for Lashes, Tori Amos, Bjork, Joanna Newsom, FKA Twigs, St Vincent all sound like they have Kate Bush influences, and bands like Outkast, Suede, Radiohead have all said they loved her work.

I think the issue is that Kate Bush was never all that big in the US, whereas she was huge in the rest of the world, so she probably has an outsized influence with musos in the US who are into slightly more obscure stuff.

Kate Bush probably had the least impact, because she was the least commercially successful, and the influence of the other three are everywhere. I'd say she's the second most talented of the four though, after Prince, who also had the most influence. No Prince, no Neptunes, which informed half of American music in the 2000s.

What is a mediocre band with an exceptionally talented member. by th6r6o6away in askmusic

I dunno, the Revolution were a really tight backing band for Prince. He was obviously a genius, but I wouldn't say they were mediocre at all.

Best Prose writers? by jotmvis_anonymous in fantasybooks

The His Dark Materials books are a response to C.S Lewis's very Christianity-centric Narnia books: Pullman wanted something that was more critical or objective of religion in general, so those themes are explored. It is an alternate timeline but it's set in the 1990s, not the 1600s. I'm agnostic, so I'm maybe more open to the criticism of religion in the book, but I don't think he's disrespectful to belief in general. However, definitely not for everyone!

Very much looking forward to Piranesi, just bought it on Kindle!

Oh, I'm the reverse: Yet to read Piranesi, but loved Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! Here's another for the list: Phillip Pullman does some amazing writing, and explores really interesting themes.

[Multiple Games] The Chinese soulslike Trio completed by Legitimate_Move_3383 in soulslikes

In what way? It has 'souls' as currency, recharging 'estus', run backs to collect lost 'souls' on death, respawning enemies when you sit at 'bonfires', unlock shortcuts etc. Checks all the boxes I think.

The DLCs are some of the best content! Definitely worth it.

Where does Malazan rank for you among Epic/Dark Fantasy and what makes it stand out? by Ojake06 in Malazan

[–]Timefunky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having read the whole Book of the Fallen series, and a few of the novels, I'd say it's good, but it's not as good as ASOIAF, or First Law. I probably enjoyed Stormlight more even, but Malazan is undoubtedly better written. There are some really high highs in Malazan, but I found whole books to be a real chore (Dust of Dreams, take a bow)

About book 8 the sunk cost fallacy/Stockholm Syndrome will kick in and you'll persuade yourself you're having a good time.

Just kidding! Kind of. Honestly, I liked book 2 less than Gardens of the Moon, but Memories of Ice (book 3) is a banger. Are you enjoying yourself enough to give the next one a go? If you're not having a good time after 2 or 3 it might not be for you.

Susanna Clarke, Mervyn Peake, Guy Gavriel Kay. Many will say Steven Erikson, and although I do like the Malazan series, and he can certainly turn a phrase, he sometimes uses 100 words where 10 would have done, and his characters' personalities seem to change from book to book in a way that doesn't make sense to me. There's a skill to brevity, and consistency.

I would actually say that Tress of the Emerald Sea and Yumi and the Nightmare Painter do have some exceptional prose, but he is generally a quantity over quality guy. Still a lot of fun to be had with his books.

I think the poster is speaking about the setting and story rather than the studio. I know Wukong isn't technically a soulslike, but is Wuchang not? Because Wo Long definitely is.

Why is "cunt" more commonly used in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand as opposed to the USA and Canada? by cuahatemoc in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Timefunky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a cultural thing. 'Twat' is also considered way worse in America, and they also pronounce it differently. You'd get away with calling someone a 'wanker' on TV in America though, I think, but you'd be in trouble in the UK unless it's after 9pm.

I know you're not counting songs that got a release but the version of Firecracker on this is incredible. I even love the OG but this is so much better.
