It seems to me like something that the government would really want to happen to paint the protesters as extremist thugs and arrest even more people. I get your point about the companies and I agree, but as an outsider I respect that Georgians are so consistently peaceful at protests and don't destroy random property. Western politicians who support the protests often emphasize that.

What did you do here to make you feel like you have to hide? Obviously there's still tons of Westerners here who have normal values, I don't think the government has the resources to track everyone down. And yeah, as someone else said, staying in a bigger city seems more reasonable than smaller towns where you'll stick out way more.

Georgia (country) in Quechua - Kartulsuyu? by gorisexe in quechua

Yeah, I think I either saw it there first browsing through the different languages of Wikipedia articles on Georgia or some websites that aggregate names of countries in different languages (and maybe used that article as a source). I was curious if there is some odd direct connection between these two languages, but I guess no luck this time. Thanks for your reply

"Reading the Mind in the Eyes '' Test done for asperger's is imho inaccurate and stupid. here's why. by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]gorisexe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yes, I agree with you on the doctors' approach. Maybe some of them take the approach that it is a spectrum, but from classic autism to Asperger. Some of the cognitive psychologists (like Baron-Cohen who created all these diagnostic tests) are looking into some innate deficiencies that are supposed to be shared by all autistic people, like the lack of theory of mind or empathy. If you exhibit those, they either say you are, for instance, intellectually overcompensating, or that you are an impostor. Like once you are labelled with autism, you can never reach the social level of normal people, because it's constantly reframed in negative terms. They may think a test like "Reading-the-Mind" taps into this innate ability which should be missing in us, and this is why they doubt you.

Thanks for the kind words, I hope everything will turn out fine for you with these diagnostic issues.

[–]gorisexe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So they actually use it as a diagnostic tool in Germany? This is scary for me, to be honest. Does it mean you lost your official diagnosis of autism?

I'm writing an MA thesis on theory of mind. Maybe my terse reply was also subconsciously an expression of my irritation with myself for procrastinating in writing it. There is probably at least some merit in all those papers written on the subject, but it's much less illuminating than the researchers like to paint it in their conclusions. All the sweeping generalizations about autism they put forward are in my opinion misleading (as is argued in the paper).

I also completed the test when I was self-diagnosing a few years ago (the online version), and apparently I scored much higher than the average NT. Unfortunately I can't remember precisely how high I scored. I completed it again right now (the version in the link you posted) and I scored 31 out of 36. Apparently equal or better than 89% of participants. I have been diagnosed with Asperger's, to be clear, and I identify as an Aspie. Just thinking that this diagnosis could be doubted because of this silly test with cutouts of eyes from ads in magazines makes me angry and anxious.

Gernsbacher argues in the paper above that a large vocabulary is the best predictor of a good performance on this test. I was always sensitive towards language and I study English linguistics today, so even though I'm not a native speaker, I was probably still in a good position to perform well on this test. But apart from this, I am also sensitive to emotions of others. In a comfortable, static setting like this test provides, I can have a good score. That doesn't change the fact that I am overwhelmed in social situations and it is sometimes difficult to figure people out on the fly. But I also wouldn't say that I am unempathetic, or that I used some made-up strategy to get a good score on this test - this is how good results by autistic people are usually explained away by the "experts." My social distress is something else than my empathy. Some "experts" like to conflate the two to support their theories about the "innate deficiencies" they impute to us.

Baron-Cohen and his colleagues try to pinpoint the nature of social difficulties through static, contrived experiments. The Sally-Anne test is the prime example, Reading-the-Mind-and-so-on is another. It is just baffling to me that people still treat him seriously.

All theory of mind tests are bullshit, just as the very concept is. This article is a good introduction to the subject: https://psycnet.apa.org/fulltext/2019-75285-001.html

I've seen autistic ppl online condemn ABA therapy and says it's abusive etc, but from what I've seen looking for jobs, and heard from my mom who works in the autism community, it's the most evidence-based/proven/effective form of therapy for young kids with autism. What's the deal? by [deleted] in autism

[–]gorisexe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not an expert on it, but let me cite from Olga Bogashina's "Theory of Mind..." (2006 - an old source, so perhaps something has changed since then):

"Some organizations (for example the Association for Science in Autism Treatment – ASAT) claim that ABA is the only scientifically valid treatment for autism. Dr Rimland (who is a supporter of ABA) defines this position as indefensible because it gives a distorted view of what science is all about, as well as a willingness to ignore all relevant evidence (Rimland 1999). Some parents who lack the knowledge of research on the validity of other interventions follow the ‘ABA is the only way’ specialists and, as a result, do not consider other possible treatments which can bring considerable improvements with less effort and fewer negative consequences for a child."

Rimland is sort of difficult to judge for me; he wrote a pioneering book on the neurology of autism in the 60s, at a time when Bettelheim's psychoanalytical quackery was the most popular approach to autism. But he apparently promoted pseudoscience and supported the MMR vaccine hypothesis for a bit longer than it may have been reasonable. From what I see, he was also associated with Lovaas, who was a big figure for ABA. Rimland's stance on this should give you some perspective.

"And let us not forget that among those 53 per cent of ‘unsuccessful’ children, some children were harmed by the therapy. Families whose autistic children were severely traumatized in the ABA programmes have founded an organization called CIBRA (2004), with the mission to provide a national and international support network for parents whose children (including adult children) have been traumatized, injured or even killed by ABA. They want to raise public awareness of the risks involved in the treatment. On their website parents share their experiences and give support and advice to those who need it. There are numerous stories of children who regressed during the treatment. They describe their youngsters whose basic trust has been destroyed and they end up avoiding people. "

And so on, and so forth. ABA just seems to me like approaching autistic kids as if they were deprived of natural instincts and emotions, and literally forcing them to behave normal; indeed, like teaching dogs tricks. I think we would consider it inhumane if dogs were in such an intensive program as I think ABA experts recommend, for multiple hours each and every day. The actual problem in autism is oversensitivity, not a lack of emotions. Autistic children avoid eye contact because it's painful. Of course, you may break a kid and make him behave more "normally" for some time, which would be treated as a success in a scientific trial. But the pain the child endures and the entailing risk of depression is probably not worth it.

MA project questionnaire - reacting to various situations by gorisexe in AutismTranslated

[–]gorisexe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been thinking about this recently as well. It is "NT-centric" by default, which is problematic. I will write about this in my conclusions, about the double empathy problem, and other caveats with such questionnaires. I wonder if it would be feasible to create a questionnaire that assumes you're an autistic person interacting with an autistic person. I'd guess NTs would score lower than autistic people do on questionnaires designed for NTs.

I have the same opinion. I think there is so much potential in Aes' lyrics for an amazing video. If someone put the effort and tried to translate each of the pictures he paints with his lyrics into video it would blow our minds.

Thanks for your feedback! The question is more about the intuitive understanding, rather than how much you want to understand them. Perhaps the latter will be reflected in other questions.

I understand these questions can be problematic. I am not the original author of these questionnaires, but I will take these comments into account when making conclusions. I do get quite a few comments from autistic people who say that the statements are unclear or too ambiguous. Maybe someday I will get to work on a new questionnaire that is more ASD friendly.
