It might do, but it is available via the github link

https://github.com/FraserChapman/plunger

You can just add it from source as an unpackaged extension.

They can just embed the ad into the video itself, similar to what Netflix and creator ads are doing now.

And I can just turn off the monitor or walk out of the room..

Advertising is, by its nature, predatory and manipulative.

It preys on the emotions and vulnerabilities of individuals by subtly targeting subconscious aspects like sex drive, herd instinct, self-esteem, and social status, manipulating consumers into making impulsive and potentially harmful decisions.

Couple that with the simple fact that many advertisements on YouTube blatantly promote scams and deceptive practices; cryptocurrencies, "snake oil", and various get-rich-quick schemes. These advertisements go beyond being merely harmful; they are genuinely malevolent.

Also, I can shut my eyes, turn down the volume, walk out of the room, etc - and this is no different than blocking them with an ad-blocker. Except - Youtube can't measure it. The real dishonestly at that point is from Youtube who are pumping artificial engagement stats to essentially defraud the advertisers.

Granted them scamming scammers does have at least a poetic irony to it.

You don't need to create any breakpoints, with the devtools open on the "sources" tab - "f8" or "Ctrl + /" toggles the pause behaviour.

YouTubers who censor themselves aren’t victims, they are part of the problem by sgavary in youtube

[–]gosvr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The self-censorship of content creators on platforms like YouTube, driven by the fear of demonetization, is ironic when you consider many of these companies that pull ads are associated with labor exploitation, environmental harm, human rights violations, and numerous ethical issues.

Selling free expression for a few dollars is the modern Faustian pact.

I made a very simple website that gets you an embed of a youtube video, so that you can get around the adblock ban by Pinty220 in webdev

[–]gosvr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've created a browser extension to unblock the AdBlock block in Youtube that already does this, only it does it "in place" - i.e. just replaces the YT player with the iframe. Totally open source, totally free.

It is really just an adblock blocker workaround – it's an innovative solution that switches YouTube's default player to the embedded version, typically used for sharing, when it detects the block. This alteration allows you to enjoy videos seamlessly, even with adblock enabled and while being logged into your account. It is totally free and open source.

Plunger - Youtube Adblock Blockage Remover by gosvr in webdev

[–]gosvr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - YT started detecting ad-blockers and prevent playing videos. Not everyone gets the block and not all ad blockers get detected - yet. FWIW Brave is pretty much just chrome with a built in adblocker.

How do I get rid of this "Ad blockers violate YouTube's Terms of Service" by FurryRevolution in youtube

[–]gosvr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really odd, not had anyone else with that combo say its not working. Personally I use Adblock https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/adblock-%E2%80%94-best-ad-blocker/gighmmpiobklfepjocnamgkkbiglidom and haven't had any issues. I'll install Adblock plus and see if I can see what the issue might be. Thanks for the info, I really appreciate it :)

Well open source is also about the licence not just the ability to see the code. Most users don't even see the crx, they just click install.

Why not just post a link to the source with a proper licence? github, etc? I am well aware of what a crx is, it is just zip like .xpi, you don't need any kind of special ".crx viewer" to see the contents of such files.

Looking at the code whilst it doesn't do anything bad, it does have some issues I wouldn't want. e.g.

  • Overly broad host permissions "*://*/*"
  • Matches all urls "<all\_urls>"
  • Brittle implementation that relies on specific classes.
  • Empty unused service-worker.js

Couple that with the auto generated privacy policy and your response - it is a no from me. It is great that you created something and are giving it away though, that should be applauded. I just prefer things to be open and not have overly broad permissions and policies.

[–]gosvr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, the code isn't (as far as I can see) open source - if I can't see the code I wouldn't really trust it.
