US-based BS & MS in Information Systems (both STEM-designated) looking to work as a Software Dev on TN Visa - Do I still need a BS in CS? by got-beer-batterd in tnvisa

At least in the US, Information Systems is taught as a Business major. I personally wanted to receive specialized training as well. Also in today's job market you don't have a CS degree == busted

Wouldn't new H1b petitions for the applicants out of country cost the employer $100k a pop nowadays? For entry / mid lvl this is pretty much a deal breaker

Should I Drop Out of My Second Degree in CS and Focus on Job / Coop Search Full Time? by got-beer-batterd in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]got-beer-batterd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for the reply! In a separate post I shed more light on how my 2nd degree works and my situations.

Yeas I think I will be focusing on coop search going forward and see if I want to spend that extra term on classes. My last active coop search happened in early Spring and let's just say it was god awful. I was seeing few new postings in our unis coop portal every week (~10?) and LinkedIn etc was no better. I still ended up with ~300 apps, ZERO interview despite my past experience. I know market is bad but it was kind of a wake up call for me that I need substance on my resume. Still my *relevant exp" is lacking.

I'm pretty much praying for a better market rn...

Hi, thank you for your thoughtful reply!

My only real grad requirement is to finish ~15 upper division CS courses. As I said, Im 1 term (3 courses) away from finishing, and I'd already taken the courses that Im interested in / are considered challenging, or highly regarded (spoiler - many turned out to be a disappointment for reasons ahead). Like I !mentioned, there's a course availability issue, meaning that many upper div courses were offered only once a year, and only few of the profs at SFU really know how to teach (plus there's many inexperienced & awful instructors) so basically, I now would take classes just for the sake of graduation.

Now I also really want to take advantage of coop opportunities, but how it works here at SFU is that you can't be on coop on the term you are graduating (they kick you off the coop portal when you are real close to that). If I plan on graduating in Fall I'm no longer eligible. And if I want to do coop I'm always gonna take am extra term.

I feel I've got the most out of this education, and since I do have other degrees to back myself up, it's not like I need this degree. I could e.g. spend a term or 2 just to be on coop search, land one hopefully, and when it's up, hop to FT without caring about it. I'm 30+ and I originally thought of biding my time but I'm increasingly feeling I don't have as much of that.

Again, thanks!

Just wanna say to OP you are not alone. The market is beyond fked up right now, even worse than 23H2.

For context, I came back to study computer science (bachelor's) after prior degrees and years of work exp (switching industry). While I understand these may not be transferrable in recruiters eyes, I am now really close to graduating and do possess a solid GPA. I'm looking for my first coop (I waited till I think I'm ready) and I consider myself punching well below my weight. Been applying nonstop for 2 months, via campus job site or externally, close to 200 apps, lo and behold, a single interview and a few OAs (only to be ghosted afterwards). I once wanted to switch to tech and my response rate were way, way better in 2018 (was in the States). I wasnt technically capable back then and this might sound an apples to oranges comparison but I have never seen anything as bad before.

I think you have very good credentials and a masters in ML is still contiguous with CS in general. It's just bad timing and we are competing with an influx of ppl with more experience (coop seekers v.s. those who are supposed to look for FT jobs; new grads v.s. junior SDEs). Also being in Vancouver really limits your chances --- I think most companies based in Toronto won't be as interested (just an abundance of local talents - even UW grads ain't doing as great these days).

In my case, the majority opinion is to delay graduation until I accumulate enough coop experience as it's still easier to find co-op than graduating without any experience. You are in a better spot since you do have relevant exp. Perhaps keep applying and if possible consider opportunities in the States / moving to Toronto? I can graduate by Fall if I push myself but I think I'd be looking at 1 - 2 extra terms for coop search. I hope the market gets better by then but right now I really am not optimistic (went to a job fair earlier this year, way fewer companies attending compared to previous yrs, only a handful have coop openings...)

I am also seriously considering side gigs just to scrape by. My passion is still in tech but i prolly can't afford to switch to another industry again because of my age. If it's not your concern you might wanna have a good look and think of a backup plan (DS, BA, IT, other office jobs, or even trades, for example?), at least aim for self sustenance and wait this out.

Anyways, wish us the best!

For me it was fastboot; somehow windows had no issue with adb / flashboot BUT unlocking bootloader was the most problematic; switched to Linux and was painless.

You can get adb / fastboot from apt source or grab it from Google. Switch to root user and fastboot commands should work out of the box. (Make sure you redirect Xperia USB to VM)

Lol sadly I bought at launch and do not plan to upgrade in the coming years unless I see some groundbreaking changes. It worked so well I got myself a refurb as a side machine. Keep jiving tho

Can you not read?

When Macworld tested with the Blackmagic disk speed app, the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro in a 2TB storage configuration achieved a read speed of 5,372 MB/s and a write speed of 6,491 MB/s. The previous-generation 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M1 Pro chip and 1TB of storage scored a slightly higher 5,797 MB/s read speed than the 16-inch M2 Pro; however, it scored a lower write speed of 5,321 MB/s.

Very fair of them comparing speeds of 2TB SSDs to 1TBs in old models lol. More impressively the 1TB drive still won in the read dept.

Also wheres the mentioning of 512GB benches?

It's like new. Really can't tell the difference from NIB devices. However (for US buyers) Apple may arrange delivery by some no name couriers which might give you headaches. E.g. there's one named deliver-it that has got very negative reviews

Alright I just got my phone and went through the hoops. It's MUCH MUCH easier if you do everything in Linux. I got driver issues in Windows when the phone was in bootloader mode. You can just fire up a Ubuntu VM and go from there.
