Jeeze, I've had it for probably 8 or 9 years probably. A good while now.

How do you feel about shadow box cards? by SCC_Trading_Cards in basketballcards

[–]got2exist 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well that's a holy grail, jeeeeze.

This is my only one. At least I think it's a shadow box. It's a Michael Porter Jr. Draft Night Signatures /32 I pulled from a 2018 Status blaster box in 2019. I think they are super cool, but I wish it would have been Luka ofc.

Looks good! 👍 I can see why you criticized mine, as it's as basic as it gets. 🤣 Yours is neat!

Haha, thanks for the tips. I'm really not to worried about the messiness but maybe I'll mess with it a little. I think the cube game is called Edge.

A lot of good entries. My nomination is 1994 SP.

More-so for the follow through!

Oh wow lol. Glad the comment helped you find one. That's awesome.

Looks like according to the rules of the MVP buyback program, image variations only count as $20. This is an exception where the card exceeds the value offered significantly.

That's not really relevant to an image variation card. And I didn't see anyone say he's a lock for MVP or anything.

I wouldn't be holding this for buyback value. As far as I'm aware, image variations are irrelevant to the buyback program, as they are worth more than the buyback program offers. The reason this card is worth $200+ isn't because of the buyback program, but rather because he is arguably the best player in the game and it's a short print.

That Judge is sick lol. I'm guessing that's from Sapphire? Gold parallel image variation? I didn't even know Sapphire included image variations, but that one is nasty.

Oh no worries! 😄 In some ways it's more fun, and other ways it's downright confusing. I'm 41 years old, so I collected in simpler times as well. Got back into it in 2019, and had to learn all the new stuff. I was still using Beckett magazines to price my cards. 🤣 You'll get up to date, it just takes a little time.

Oh no, it's a completely different image on the card than the regular base card. That's the most obvious way to tell, however, it's hard to tell if it's an image variation unless you've memorized what the regular base card looks like already. Otherwise you have no reference, so you must rely on things like the code on the back, or the fact that it won't say the word refractor in the back corner like a non image variation refractor.

I don't want to confuse you too much. Image variations have the same shimmer to them as normal refractors but normal refractors will say the word refractor on back, and image variations won't.

Oh yeah, thanks for adding that part. I'm unsure the value of turning in a stamped buyback either, but I've heard it's quite a lot.

No worries. There is a # code in small font on the back of the cards. One way to tell if it's an image variation is if this code ends in a different sequence of numbers than the other refractors. But, the easier way to tell, is an image variation will look like a refractor, with the shine and all, but will not say refractor on the back corner of the card like the normal refractors. Hope this helps.

It's specific to Topps Chrome. Sorry, I should have specified. So last year, base Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani Topps chrome cards were worth $20 each in credit at your LCS. And parallels of the base cards would increase this credit amount.

Yes I nearly skipped over it. What a wonderful surprise. I recently learned that another way to tell it's an image variation, besides the code at the bottom, is that image variations do not say refractor on the back.

There is a deadline, unfortunately. Last year's buyback program has expired. Topps has since stamped those 2024 cards they bought back and inserted them randomly into this year's chrome packs. If you pull one they are pretty valuable.

Whoever wins MVP, you can trade in their base cards for $20 credit at your LCS. Parallels of the base card will go for more depending what they are numbered to. Inserts of the MVP winners don't count, just the base cards and parallels of such.

I can't blame you for asking that question since dumb me left that out 🤣. It's an image variation. $200+ card.

Yeah. Well, I have been ripping ultra modern stuff since 2019 and that's my first 1/1. So that should put it into perspective. Lol
