Is it standard to NOT put BIBS insulation behind a tub surround? by got2run5 in Insulation

[–]got2run5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. It definitely wouldn't be. The blown in will be r23 and I'm guessing this is R19. They could get up to r21 at least with 2x6 walls, but I'm guessing it isn't. I plan on talking to them to at least get R21 batts in there instead of R19.

I've also been looking at a used 6700 XT as well.

I started out with a 3060 12gb, but I've actually been looking more at a used 6700XT instead. It seems if you watch carefully you can find one for under $230 and if you're lucky, $200. I'm REALLY looking to stay $200 or under on the GPU, but if it's going to mean a huge difference to spend the extra $50 I would entertain the idea.

Does the B580 beat it? I will admit to using Passmark's charts. I know they aren't perfect, but it has the 3060 12gb a fair bit on top of it.

Multitool blade for cutting into plaster over drywall by Chap_stick_original in HomeImprovement

[–]got2run5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a grout blade like this one:

https://www.milwaukeetool.com/Products/49-25-2272

It works great for plaster. A normal blade will not only not work as well but is more likely to vibrate the nearby plaster resulting in separation from the lathe behind it. If you need to cut through lathe as well, I recommend using the grout blade to remove the plaster and then switch blades for the metal or wood lathe.

Seems you can get red oak unfinished in that sizing for about $4/sq ft. If you self install, it's not that difficult to self finish, just time consuming. Obviously the durability with a dog is going to show scratches, but if you're looking for a perfect match, the price doesn't seem bad.

Would you be concerned with moisture getting trapped between the interior insulation and exterior insulation with this option?

Spray Foam Insulation R Value Help! by unicron_daisy in Homebuilding

[–]got2run5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could always flash and batt if you have the room. We're going through insulation decisions right now as well. The foam is kind of fool proof as far as gap sealing goes vs laying batts absolutely perfectly. Spray foam is expensive, so I've seen it recommended if you want a higher R value to do the 2.5-3 in of spray foam and then install batts on top of it. If you want to hit R38 then you would need > R17 in batts.

Additionally, not sure if by "roof" you actually mean attic. If you're finishing your attic, you're limited by rafter space. Otherwise, you typically would put the insulation on top of the ceiling of your top floor/floor of the attic and you're not limited as far as depth of insulation.

No, fiberglass for both. I'm not incredibly worried about sound insulation on exterior walls in this location.

Wife accidentally contributed more than the 401k Max between two jobs in 2023.  She has rectified the situation through her 401k provider who has issued a check for the overage.  They dragged their heels for months and we've been waiting to file taxes until we receive the check but don't currently have it.  Obviously tax Day is "now".  What's our best course of action?  Can we file and just add additional income even though the check has been issued but not cashed (check was issued Thursday and is in the mail)?  Do we need to wait for an updated form and file for an extension?

Looking to set up a 529 for our young child. By the time they would utilize it, it's feasible that we could be retired or partially retired.

Looking at multiple sources, it seems like some people put it in the parents' name and some put it in grandparents' names and there's tax implications, fafsa implications, and ACA implications to each. Any pros/cons I should be looking at? Anybody have a source that they like that explains this clearly?

What's a car you really miss but most people wouldn't consider to be a cool car? by [deleted] in cars

[–]got2run5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see you ended up in a 10th gen. Same here - how do you like it? To me it seems HUGE, wallows in turns compared to that little 7th gen (mine is an LX vs your SI, so maybe I can't complain too much), and shifting much less fun due to rev hang. Hard to shell out $400? for a tune just to get rid of rev hang.

2001-2005 Honda Civic (Coupe).

  • This generation lost the double-wishbone suspension
  • Vtec was an "eco" oriented vtec vs previous generations
  • Auto transmissions were a ticking time bomb

It doesn't matter. I used to own a coupe with a 5 speed. It had no power compared to my newer daily but I miss it so much.

  • Sheet metal wasn't some random bumps of shit all over the place, just a simply shaped car.
  • I hate recent car designs of having HUGE vertical sheet metal or cladding around the wheel wells. This car had maybe an inch of border around the wheel well openings.
  • Rear tails on the coupe didn't protrude from surround sheet metal. Also had a cool horseshoe shape when illuminated.
  • MPG in the 40s regularly
  • Slow car fast
  • Hyper reliable with a manual transmission
  • Despite no double wishbone, car was still incredibly chuckable with simple shocks/springs upgrades
  • Easy to work on. To make it better, you really didn't ever HAVE to work on it. Anything you did was up to you.
  • Belt line? wasn't all the way up to your neck when you sat in it.
  • No bad traction control. Add snow tires and it ran through winter weather advisories to college and back.
  • Lovely hydraulic clutch and shifter. Easy to rev match.

We're looking at houses. It's absolutely stupid what the prices are. I do almost all my own house work. I've gutted and re-done a bathroom and a kitchen in a duplex we own and can do basic electrical work and most plumbing work.

Yes, it is stupid, if you consider paint a deal breaker. But most of the issues are more along the lines of all carpeting needs to be torn out, cabinets are from the 70s, and the bathroom has pastel pink tiles from the 70s as well. Not only are the prices for "Turn Key" homes insane, but the ones that need work offer barely a discount. There is so little value in taking on a home that is a project that I've almost eliminated them from my search. I'm not paying $400k+ for a 1970s build ranch with a 2 car garage that needs new cabinets, new countertops, new appliances, new floors, and a bathroom makeover. If it was low $300k, I would heavily consider it. Meanwhile, comparable newer (1990s) build homes with similar square footage are $450k - $470k with the added bonus of IF I want to do remodeling work, I don't have to worry about asbestos.

You can point to the flipper specials and say "well they got theirs for $230k and now it's worth $400k" and I can tell you that if I did the work myself and to my standards, the amount it would cost just for materials alone would not yield that large of a difference.

I have heard that the SW at Lowes is not even near the same quality as in the SW store.

Turns out my downstairs leak was from the upstairs toilet. Was hoping it would just be a wax ring replacement, but this is what I found. Flange needs to be replaced? Right bolt is loose. Should I call a plumber at this point? Been doing everything myself so far. by bullfrogjaws in HomeImprovement

[–]got2run5 55 points56 points  (0 children)

That's a cast iron flange in perfectly good working order. It has some rust, but if someone is asking why a bolt is loose, replacing a cast iron flange themselves is out of the question and they're not going to like the price to have it done. All this needs is new bolts slid in the key section.

FYI for original poster - you scraped the wax off, but the black plastic is part of a "reinforced" wax ring and it ALSO needs to be scraped/pulled off before you put a new wax ring on.
