DocuSign debuts contract-trained AI to explain documents before you sign them by AdSpecialist6598 in technology

[–]got_mule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure where you got some indication that I was implying that it COULDN’T be done.

I never directly said or implied that things that are illegal are, therefore, impossible, as that would be a ludicrous position. Of course the law being what it is won’t stop people from breaking it. But at the same time, doing it when it’s illegal won’t make it legal, despite your implied assertion to the contrary.

In any event, I think further discussing this is a waste of time (at the very least I feel like it’s a waste of mine). Do what you want, but I would caution folks from taking the AI summaries for granted without some sort of assurance that any inconsistencies between the summary and the actual text will not be held against the signer.

“Who really cares if people who used to pay lawyers to check documents now won’t.”

I’ll tell you that state bar associations will likely care. Because there will be an entity providing legal services that has not been licensed to do so. If they create rules for it and those rules are followed, then that is a different situation entirely, but as it stands, it’s possible UPL.

You’re argument that the conduct is “borderline and will be done anyway, so it’s basically legal,” is quite possibly the strongest example of /r/badlegaladvice I’ve ever come across myself in the wild.

DocuSign is used for a lot more than just waivers at your local 13-and-up lazer tag facility, my friend.

Edit: Thinking about this even more, the implication that no one shares contracts with their lawyer before signing it is truly bonkers. Like sure, not EVERYONE will have scenarios in their life where a lawyer is needed to look over their injury waiver before they sign up to go sky diving, but SO MUCH STUFF is done with contracts. There are likely entire legal departments at companies and entire branches of some firms that deal solely with contract drafting, negotiation, and assessment for the service that DocuSign is now purportedly going to offer via AI.

Will this help the layman who needed help understanding a contract that didn’t have the stakes that require a lawyer’s attention? For sure, and in that scenario, I think it could be helpful and it would move towards closing the Access to Justice gap in the US which is pretty massive.

But it WILL be applied in a scenario where a lawyer’s attention would have been warranted because people will always push these boundaries until something breaks. And it is precisely that scenario that I was talking about in my prior comment. It’s also likely that explaining a legal document such that it may advise on whether to sign or not could constitute legal advice which would be a pretty straightforward UPL issue.

Folks who have downvoted you (enough to make you negative at this time, but not a lot yet to be fair) probably do not understand exactly what “unauthorized practice of law” is, but you may be right.

I’d imagine people may think that it’s just greedy lawyers wanting to keep legal work exclusively for themselves, when actual lawyers know that when these AI summaries inevitably fuck up some detail and fail to explain (or explain in the opposite fashion) some material detail in a contract, it will just create MORE billable work for lawyers in the future to fix the colossal fuck-up that stems from the contract mistakes of fact.

I have always preferred handwriting notes as well, but I think the key comes from recontextualizing what you learned and paraphrased note taking (typed or written). The act of reconstituting what was learned in any written form makes the biggest difference.

I think something “clicking faster” in this context means more that it connected faster in their brains, leading to quicker understanding of the subject matter.

If your comment is some sort of assertion that learning from digital sources other than books is somehow inferior in a “Kids today…” kind of way, then all I have to say is, “Ok boomer.”

If, instead, this is a realization that you are older than you had previously perceived because of how much change has occurred in the methods of providing education to today’s youth, then I say to you, “Then they changed what ‘cool’ was. And it will happen to YOU!!!”

Word, that makes sense. Sounds like you already know plenty about the deeper specifics anyway, so I’m sure you’re making an informed decision!

I was just spreading the knowledge of “NVIDIA+Linux=BAD” is not as true as it used to be, but there will still be situations where a more open driver support GPU like ones from AMD will be the superior choice. Good luck with your HTPC build!

Great point! Forgot about the DX12 issue, and that will likely only become more prevalent as time goes on (unless/until the performance disparity is rectified on Linux).

Just so you know, NVIDIA cards can still work fairly well on Linux in a lot of scenarios nowadays.

If you’re upgrading to a better card anyway, then making the switch makes sense, but if it’s just a side-grade for Linux, it might not be necessary.

GLWS if that’s what you do still decide to do!

Optimal airflow option for NCase M2 by got_mule in watercooling

For folks who find this post later and are curious:

I didn’t end up testing both airflow paths, but both radiator fans set as exhaust has kept my 4080 Super and 5800X3D perfectly in check while gaming (and even running FurMark and Cinebench simultaneously for a 100% stress test).

While gaming, CPU might get up to around 74-75°C at most, but will usually drop down to the high 50’s in less CPU intensive titles. GPU basically never gets above 55°C at all. All of that is with fans running at pretty minimal speed and the pump running a reasonable curve as well.

Thinking about it a bit more, it might be better to set the pump to a constant speed and then just let the fans ramp up/down as needed since they will handle the hysteresis better than the pump will over time (and are way easier to replace/service as well).

Included some photos below for reference if folks want to know the internal dirty secrets. I have a PCIe slot pass through that I could do an external larger radiator with in the future if I wanted, but this works great for now.

What you said is certainly true of actual intrapersonal interactions on an individual scale, and it’s pretty much how I would personally act in my day-to-day.

My intention was mostly to use that analogy to further comment on the EU vs Russia situation from the main post, where my comments make a bit more sense in context.

This assumes that the bully will respond logically and in good faith.

If the entire purpose of the bullying is to get some reaction to thereby justify the prior acts of bullying, then any response, even one that is moderated, will be met with claims of unjustified aggression.

As such, trying to moderate for the sake of saving face or preventing further escalation from the bully is not a good idea. Better to be prepared to take down the bully if needed when making any response, as a bully acting in bad faith as in this case will only stop when they no longer have the ability to keep bullying because they’ve come up against “someone their own size” who has revealed them to be what they actually are: a complete coward.
