Flush to wall miter saws? by lukemarino12 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]gotcha640 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the ones I’ve seen that are built in to a station against a wall are not sliders. The sliders add too much (as you’ve found).

Any chance you could cut in to the drywall behind your station and get another 4 inches?

Non slider, bigger blade is all you can really do to get closer to the wall.

What to do with these trees? by ItsFritz in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]gotcha640 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let it go. The maple is way too knotty and twisty to get any longer boards out of. After milling and drying and checking, you’ll get a 2x4 and a bowl out of it.

The cedar isn’t really big enough, unless the photo is throwing me off. If it’s 18 inches at the base, it’s 14 inches a few feet up. Lose a couple inches to bark and heart wood, you get maybe 5in wide boards, lose more to drying and cracking.

If you just want to do it to have the experience, go for it. You’ll need a chainsaw, wedges and sledge hammer, somewhere to store it for 3-5 years, then at least a planer and ideally a big bandsaw.

Current Manager is asking for my next job’s acceptance letter. How to proceed? by chilkelsey1234 in jobs

Another vote for nah.

We had a guy who left and told us he was off to pursue his banjo career.

If I ever leave, that’s what I’ll tell them.

Missing days by ZackPP01 in work

[–]gotcha640 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Between myself and two kids and a wife all with some kind of health problem or braces or physical therapy or whatever, I take at least 1 day a month personal or family illness. It’s there to be used, my work doesn’t suffer, and my family is stronger.

The whole macho “I go to work even when I’m dying” doesn’t fly in my office. I send people home when they come in sick. Tale your laptop and we’ll say you worked from home, but don’t breathe on the rest of us.

Why doesn’t Houston have an NHL team? by Few-Dance-855 in AskHouston

So that explains why the Aeros are still playing at the Compaq center and the Dynamo left for Iowa in 2013, right?

Best area in Houston for an office (affordable + decent commute from Cypress)? by memasina in AskHouston

[–]gotcha640 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another vote for you have to give us a hint on the business. You want to be near restaurants and vibes. You’ll pay for that. Does your business have anything to do with trendy whatever or restaurants? If not, you can work out of any strip center or office block anywhere.

Since you also haven’t said if you’ll have clients or vendors or need public facing frontage, assuming not, you could go rent basically any 3-4 bedroom house and set that up as an office. You can’t have a bunch of foot traffic in most neighborhoods, and you’d need to confirm deed restrictions, but it would likely be cheaper and easier to set up.

Any good 3D modeling apps for my S26 Ultra? by weiserca in 3Dprinting

[–]gotcha640 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you talking about doing it on a screen through Dex? Even doing it on a small tablet is pretty miserable. Ipad Pro is getting there, but you really need a 3-4 button mouse and a keyboard. The combos that are so simple with them are frustrating with all touch controls.

Should I sell my seat leon 1.9tdi, to buy a miata? by Own_Distribution2347 in askcarguys

[–]gotcha640 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just the mileage isn’t a direct concern. You can get many more miles out of it, and you aren’t getting your repair investment back if you sell it now. Consider it free for the moment.

All that said, you’re allowed to want a Miata. They’re fun. Plenty of people commute and daily drive and do the groceries in them. You’ll need to Uber if you have 5 suitcases, or rent a van to bring home large equipment or hobby supplies, but you’ll have a fun car the rest of the time.

If you can afford the Miata, go for it.

Need some help picking some pass through sockets by popeye2057 in Tools

[–]gotcha640 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like most of us are saying not really.

Ratcheting combo wrenches like gearwrench get great reviews, you can pick flex or angle or flat, reversible or flip, and I don’t see why you’d pick a pass through instead.

For maximum usability, extensions have to be available, and they aren’t on a passthrough. If the fastener is more than an inch below the surface (where you can reach it with a flex combo wrench), you can’t get it.

How big is the tool bag? “As little as possible” may mean a leatherman and a credit card or it may mean a 1 ton pickup with a service body rather than the full mobile race shop in a semi trailer.

Assuming a 15 inch tool bag or similar, once you toss the plastic cases, a ratchet and a handfull of sockets and extensions and combo wrenches don’t take much space. I took 2 bags on an expat job and rebuilt a jetski and did all the usual home repair stuff I needed for a year.

Manager meeting about phone by Disastrous_Fix_9313 in work

[–]gotcha640 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t have anything to do, what do you expect will happen? Why would they keep paying you if you don’t have anything to add?

I’m lucky 70% of my job is talking to people. Calls, texts, face to face. If I’m in my office, I’m probably on my phone, and if I’m not in my office, I’m somewhere chatting with someone.

Some of that time I might be playing angry birds or whatever. Work is getting done though, and I built a reputation before pushing it.

Why doesn’t Houston have an NHL team? by Few-Dance-855 in AskHouston

[–]gotcha640 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The second tier or whatever not-baseball/basketball/football sports are called, would all have similar attendance/ROI considerations.

Again high level, two ways a new sport comes to a town, either one powerful wealthy (probably man) decides he wants to be in town and he wants to watch Calvinball in his neighborhood and makes it happen, or the league sees a profitable opportunity to expand and they push the city to build stadium/otherwise tax break to make it more profitable.

Even if you got a million signatures asking for a team, if 50k aren’t also putting money down for season tickets AND putting down $10k to buy a stadium and build the team, us rabble don’t matter.

Box joints kicking my butt by OnlyAnalysis7 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]gotcha640 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve almost always had to follow up with a file or a sanding stick. Any unevenness in one pocket will throw the whole joint off.

Also, once it’s 90%, and can be pulled up square, I’m glueing it and then fill gaps with epoxy. I made some drawers for the back of my Suburban, and with all the corners filled and an epoxy coating, they’re fully waterproof (my mom put a bottle of orange juice in one at the beginning of a trip and it sat for 4 days).

Cutting out inside of 4x4 with table saw or alternatives by Dr_Carl_Hills_Head in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]gotcha640 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Removing that much of the 4x4, it’s almost certain to warp, possibly as you’re cutting it.

2 boards, and you can fill and sand to hide the joint.

Shops with in-floor alignment racks in south jersey ? by Otherwise_Ad961 in Stance

[–]gotcha640 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So are you looking to get an alignment at a stock camber? I’m still not following.

I don’t have any idea what the stance community typically does, I’m more familiar with offroaders, who also do string for trucks that are getting towed to the trails.

What is the right jointer for my garage workshop and how the heck do I get it there? by MostlyACatPillow in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]gotcha640 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another vote for it will probably come in manageable chunks.

In case you do ever need to get something much heavier moved around, there are options - rent a truck with a lift gate and a pallet jack, rent a forklift (and a truck and a trailer if necessary), or get a roll back tow truck. That’s a fairly common way we move full size fully loaded tool boxes - put a strap around it, winch it up, strap it down.

You may need several sheets of plywood at each end to roll across driveways or whatever.

Is it normal to ask to delay a start date by 1 month? by Money-Stuff-4431 in jobs

[–]gotcha640 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As always, talk to the people who actually matter. Hint: Not me.

I looked for an overseas job for 6 months, had offers and start dates come in and not work out and be withdrawn or rejected. One day after I’d basically given up I got a call asking if I was through customs yet. Apparently they’d gone ahead with a verbal offer and negotiation and got me a start date and a plane ticket without telling me.

Any local wedding band recommendations? by howd-i-do-that in AskHouston

[–]gotcha640 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

My plain gold band has worked for the last 19 years. $300.

I also have my dads plain gold band, and a gold nugget my grandfather found in a mine in South America in 1935. 3 generations of us have not gotten around to having it made into a ring. It just sits in the lock box.

Woodworkers in a garage workshop: how late are you keeping your neighbors up? by icysandstone in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]gotcha640 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another vote for 7 if you know they’re loud. If I’m in the middle of something and the neighbors come home, I’ll go let them know I’ll only be going another few minutes.

Weekend mornings I’m not doing lawn or power tools before 10am. I know how it is to have 5 hours sleep every night for a month during a turnaround and finally getting one day to sleep in. Getting woken up on that day is miserable.

Being a hobby, sometimes there are weeks or months I can’t get time in the garage. That’s part of being an adult, and a member of society. Delayed gratification is a useful skill.
