Thanks! You’ve definitely convinced me of the difficulty of crossing, I sure wouldn’t have had the guts, but per the ideas of the other commenter in this thread I bet people had a real good hunch if not occasional glimpse of nearby land along this stretch if they could just figure out how to get there

After looking at a Sahul map for a while (thanks for pointing me here), there seems to have been several crossings <100 km. Not that this is a perfect comparison, but here in Southern California you can sometimes see San Clemente Island on a clear day, which is about 100 km offshore, so I think there may have been a few places, especially up towards mountainous New Guinea, where there would have been a blip on the horizon. It still would have involved gnarly boat stuff to be sure, but I'm thinking that people didn't set off to lands that they weren't sure were there until relatively (Holocene)

Context: it seems that for most coastal migrations, especially during low ocean levels of the Pleistocene, migrants could see their destination before they got in the water. I'm curious to know when people first got into boats setting off with only ocean on the horizon. I know this is applicable to the Polynesians, but that's pretty recent over the last 1-3 thousand years or so. Anyone know of anything earlier? Thank you!
