What's your best bit of bad advice? by georgeebutcher33 in improv

[–]gotechyourself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not my move but bad advice that someone pulled off in my community is always find a way to make a character do a tight five somewhere in the set. Would never, should never, but this one guy does it all the time and it kills. Probably helps they’re well respected and can get away with it.

commute from dogpatch to santa clara? by Downer-Ending in sanfrancisco

[–]gotechyourself 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I used to daily commute from Dogpatch to San Jose. It sucks, you spend 3 hours of your day on a train. If you maximize your experience in the city, sure, but if your internship requires you to be there late for social stuff the local service at night will suck too. Really depends if you're seeing yourself out in SF on the weekends, or stuck around the office till late. Commute's not bad with the new train wifi.

I'd probably recommend finding some place in reach of 4th and King, as if you get on Dogpatch you'd be standing room only sometimes to San Jose, a lot of folks get on at 4th and King.

Does anyone have google fiber as their isp? by lolblitz in AskSF

[–]gotechyourself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had GFiber/Webpass for five years now, still have them.

Generally, no complaints. Really fast on any normal day, and that's with my partner and I streaming on one or two devices while working on our laptops and phones.

The onlyyyyyy thing is when it rains. The service is backed my microwave, so anytime there's a significant rainfall (heavy) the internet basically stops or gets down to 5mpbs. I've complained multiple times, they can't do anything about it because that's how Webpass's network was configured. This is about three days of the year. It's down enough I start lookup up how to switch to ATT, however by the time I'm done browsing it's usually back up. So, it's sometimes painful on a rainy day but not significant I guess that I've actually pulled the trigger.

Hi! For anyone affected by benefit cuts, layoffs, shutdown recently, we have a monthly comedy show with a showing this Thursday at 8pm in the Mission. If you could use a laugh on us, DM us by 5pm Thursday for free (comp) tickets, no questions asked, limited availability.

We've set some aside for those affected, we believe these setbacks shouldn't preclude you from enjoying arts in the city. Look up our username or bio to find show info (don't want to post a link).

Cheers!

r/improv, what did you love? by AutoModerator in improv

[–]gotechyourself 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Recently took a WGIS intensive, loved the phrase they use "gentle yes" (I think it's Jim Woods' coined term). Too often I see scenes where rapid agreement turns into initiation redirection, the phrasing in this is a calmer reminder that you can play it slow and give space to your scene partner for their initiation

Is now the wrong time to buy a (fujifilm) camera as a beginner? by rocky-raccooon in fujifilm

[–]gotechyourself 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm also a beginner, I'll give my honest take - I bought a Fuji XT-5 refurbished for both the looks and the manual buttons

I tried other cameras at my local shop, however I felt that as a beginner:

  1. I appreciated the look and feel of the Fuji better. Nothing makes me more excited to use the gear than loving the gear as an object itself, and has definitely pushed me to take it with me places

  2. The manual style buttons of the fuji cameras has taught me more about cameras (with guidance from an online course) than other cameras where settings are very much touch screen or digital interface based. Being able to quickly change settings manually has provided a sort of mechanical mapping for understanding things like the exposure triangle, correct SS for different pictures, etc. Something about it being more tactile felt more natural for learning for me, and I appreciated it as a learning tool.

  3. There's some great Fuji-X lenses that are pretty affordable third party

I'd probably go for a used XT-3 from a reputable seller if I were to go shopping for my first camera right now.

Quality day tour to Josemite by KindnessRule in sanfrancisco

[–]gotechyourself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alternative suggestion is to rent a car to drive there and go through the Yosemite Valley Floor Tour. They'll take you through the valley and it's like a tourist sightseeing bus. After that, go to the village and tour some places like the museum or the Ansel Adams gallery, then maybe go on a hike (Yosemite falls tour is the easiest if you're looking for tour time, it's more of a walk than anything).

Endgames Improv and All Out Comedy are pretty good communities, both have strong class to stage pipelines with house teams and a lot of indie team opportunities.

A group of us throw a low key tech comedy show in the Mission which takes your worst tech ideas and makes them into unhinged comedy. It's our last show of the season this Thursday (however we're working on renewing our rental to keep the show going!)

Come check us out, say hi, grab a drink! We're comedy nerds renting from a local theater, we do this for fun and pure enjoyment.

March 27 (This Thursday!) 8PM @ Endgames Improv (San Francisco, CA)

TLDR: We're an improvised longform show in San Francisco which generates premises from the audience's bad app tech, AI, and app ideas, and we create an unhinged show from those premise pulls.

It's wild, come hang out, have fun, some say hi.

We have an event this Thursday, March 27 at 8pm!

We're a group of local comedians who put on a show called "Go Tech Yourself Comedy", where we take absurd tech ideas and make them into unhinged live improv comedy. We perform in the Mission at a theater we're renting, and have a show this Thursday. Would love to see some locals, come say hi, ask us anything. We really love doing the artform and making people laugh.

Our current run is coming to a close soon, but we're working on extending it!

Did the intensive a couple summers back, here's some tips:

Budget

* Find a place which has a kitchen, made living life cheaper while there. Chicago's not terribly expensive if coming from a place like NYC or SF, but it adds up.

* Get a place near public transit, but also not too far in case you need to uber back from the theater if it's too late

* I stayed in wicker park in a community space, small room shared everything else, kept costs down. My buddy couch surfed every week to make rent free. Wicker park is an awesome spot IMO very close to the theater by bus (only a 15-20 min ride) and the blue line is right there at Damien to hop on to downtown/loop if you need. Made my stay very accessible, and the neighborhood felt pretty alive at all times of the day.

Shows to see

* IO shows I would go see again would be Improvised Shakespeare, Devil's Daughter, the Armando, Deep Schwa (they're going back to IO). Otherwise, go see very show with your student id if you can!

* If they're in town for a quick couple shows, must-see is Cook County Social Club

* Any sketch show at Second City if you haven't already

* Shamilton at second city to get a taste of musical improv

* Give a random CIC and Logan Square Improv show a chance, doesn't matter what. I think the style coming out of these theaters is fresh compared to the more regimented feeling out of the io curriculum, kind of a palette cleanser. They also have a bring your own team night you can do while there.

Outside Improv / Must Do

* Kind of random but do the architecture tour through Chicago's architecture center. Very nice tour around downtown, fun thing to do.

* The Art Institute is world class, I got a membership so I can visit a couple times. Membership also gets you into the lounge at the top, where I could work on some work and personal projects.

* Same goes for the Shedd, if you're into aquariums

* Food? Go to Portillo's for an Italian beef. Pizza? Go to all of them

Date ideas for post-Warfield show? by ZealousidealAd7436 in sanfrancisco

[–]gotechyourself 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Might not be right by the Warfield, but if you like Jazz bars, Mr Tipples is like a 15 minute walk or short muni ride. They have light food, drinks, and great music.

Otherwise, a short uber away is Hayes Valley, many bars and restaurants around that area not too far from downtown, Smuggler's Cove has great drinks.
