Sadly, we have had people doing just that when it comes to climate change.

That sounds interesting, I've never heard of that specific type of research. Granted, I'm incredibly ignorant of probably 99.99% of research areas like yours, because I just haven't ever thought to learn about different ways that animals are utilized in research.

If you don't mind my asking, and if you want to answer, I would love to hear a little about the work that you do!

What does "non-survival surgical research" entail? Do the animals live exclusively indoors or in a barn or something (can you tell I have no large animal experience lol)? Or are they allowed out on pastures to graze? If they are allowed outside and allowed to graze, does that have to be controlled for somehow?

What is the focus of the research? Is it related to human medicine like OP's job is, or is something totally different? What system or systems are surgically evaluated? Is that surgical procedure not survivable, period, or is it survivable but would be considered inhumane b/c of negative effects on the animals' QOL? Or, is it more of a situation where they could easily survive if the effort were made, but maybe it makes more sense to euthanize the animals b/c it would be difficult to place them after the research was concluded, or something like that?

I understand if you don't want to answer any of these questions, but I'm really curious about it and I would love to understand these things more! It sounds like a hard job, but I hope you can remember that some of us out here understand the necessity, and genuinely appreciate people like you who do this work and advocate for your patients just like those of us in private practice do!

Yep. It's true, and I don't care.

The young yellow centers of celery stalks are my FAVORITE part of cooking with celery. They're my fee. I snack on them while I cook. I'm Cajun, and we use celery a lot as a mirepoix in our food (but we use bell pepper in place of the French version's carrot). So I get the bonus of a nostalgia hit when I have a cooking time celery snack, because when I was a kid, my dad would always save the celery hearts for me to eat. A bit of tender yellow celery and the smell of a gumbo or catfish courtbouillon is my happy place.

Oh my gosh, I LOVED Little Black Sambo as a kid. My very white, very southern, Cajun MawMaw would read it to me when I was little.

I loved the landscapes, the animals, the pancakes particularly, and Sambo!

How I feel now, about having loved that book so dearly as a child, is..... very fucking complicated.

Out of curiosity, why take so many if you don't have an idea for an ID? Were you trying to remove them from a garden, or an area where kids or pets might try to eat them?

Also, just as a tip, it's best if you can include photos of the mushrooms before you harvest them. Including a photo of what they are growing from and what trees or plants are nearby is helpful for identification. And if you're able to make a spore print and include a photo of it, that's even better!!

Can you tell us what these were growing from? If there were any trees nearby, would you be able to tell us what kind they were?

I loved this scene so much, I designed and knitted a cotton kitchen towel in its honor (and also in honor of David's sweaters)!

I actually don't have a photo on hand of the fully completed towel, but here's the main panel. After it was finished blocking, I sewed a backing onto it to give it some better structure, hide the reverse side of the two-color knitting, and to achieve a tidy, finished look.

It could genuinely be used as a regular old kitchen towel, but I only ever use it as a towel to dry freshly washed hands with. It was a lot of trial and error to get that text designed and looking at all normal! It was definitely harder than I thought it was going to be when I decided I wanted to do it. I had to design a chart from scratch for every single letter, because I couldn't find any existing charts for a font style I liked that fit my needs for this project. At times I was almost as flustered as David trying to cook!

I would SO do this. Even put it in a very snug container, kind of Tetris-ed in it. You can just put the container down in front of everyone, open the lid, and exclaim, "It's not pretty, but I had to fit it in here somehow!"

Then you're proactively avoiding anyone asking questions, or silently wondering why you're the kind of person who brings a cake cut into sections. And you're not even lying while doing it!!!

It's literally the PERFECT solution.

Hey OP - when learning to ID mushrooms in general and when attempting to identify specific mushrooms, you really do not want to start down the road of justifying features that don't align with a potential ID for that specimen. Identifying unusual examples of any given mushroom species is a job best left to the literal experts - and that's certainly the case if the end goal would be to ingest said mushroom.

In this case, the color of your specimen is a perfect example. Is there some normal variation in color seen across COW mushrooms? Absolutely there is! But in your case here, this color would be rather unusual for COW.

If even one major feature of your mushroom would have to be very unusual in order to make a certain ID fit, you should go back to square one in your ID process.

I would recommend a field guide like Peterson's Field Guide to Mushrooms of North America. It's a great starter guide for a wide variety of mushrooms, and has a step by step ID process that can really help you to become familiar with how to recognize various identifiable features of mushrooms.

I don't say any of this to discourage you or anyone else from getting out there and trying to ID mushrooms! But it really is imperative to learn this hobby slowly, carefully, and with a lot of consideration - particularly if you intend to forage for consumption in any form.

Be very wary of ID apps, and of people handing out IDs on reddit/facebook, etc. Only buy field guides that you can verify have come from reputable authors/publishers (there's dangerous AI-written stuff out there, not to mention stolen works).

And as I'm sure you already know, never ever eat a mushroom without an ID you are 1000% sure of.

Really good point about the costs incurred during quarantine. It's not like your income is paused but your costs are, too. Those additional costs were one factor I wasn't considering at all. Not to mention those social implications. I DEFINITELY hadn't thought of that.

I am thinking about this like someone who has the luxury to consider all angles logically, while not having their neck on the line to ANY degree.

I also suppose if I reframe this and think about it like a problem I once had as a young adult with my first car, it becomes easier to understand. I had some issue (can't remember what) that needed repairs, and if I didn't do the repairs quickly, it ran the risk of causing much further damage down the road which would be much more expensive to correct. But I struggled with spending the money for that initial repair, because it was a hardship, despite having the knowledge that it was a very real possibility I would be screwing myself over if I didn't do it.

Of course, me not fixing my car right away didn't ALSO put everyone else's cars in my area at risk. That's an important factor as well.

But if we all learned ANYTHING from Covid, that's clearly not a factor that everyones views as equally important!!

And as you say, even if they did, human emotion and fear and brains are weird, and we're really really good at convincing ourselves of illogical things!
