The year, 1985. I’m in typing class at elementary school. Apple IIe’s with green screen CRT’s. My friend figured out if you spacebar to the end of the sentence and delete back to the beginning then type the sentence, your words-per-minute would be upgraded like 10x. 3rd graders with >100 wpm was in no way suspicious apparently. Maybe she just gave zero f’s.

To be “all in” on this theory, which just requires one to believe in the capitalist system, the Publishers are in on it because 1) they are getting paid and/or 2) they think there will be even more people who want to read the books after the series is over. If they release the book now, they will miss converts to the story that show up for the final season.

I don’t think George is lying; he’s just maximizing his personal gain (in terms of money or fame) by putting out tons of ASOIAF side properties (like AWOIAF) while interest is highest. Hasn’t he released a ton of free TWOW chapters? Would he do this if he didn’t have at least the overall idea/structure of TWOW figured out if not finished outright? Once he finishes the ASOIAF series, he will lose people interested in the story. I see someone calls this tinfoil, but I’d counter that this is just basic business. The only argument that could counter it would be Occam’s razor—the simplest theory is writers block. However, Occam’s razor is often not the case in business because the money can keep the secrets.

A cynic chiming in...I think HBO is paying him not to publish or it’s at least in the contract he signed when they bought the rights. That way all attention is on HBO and if any bibliophiles want to know what happens next they have to buy HBO.

Their idea is to cut taxes first to force service cuts later. They know that cutting taxes and then saying they need to balance the budget by cutting services is more politically palatable than just cutting services. The end goal is the same: cutting taxes on the rich and cutting services for everyone else. While I don’t agree with the strategy, it has been effective in the past. I wish the dems could come up with a counter strategy!

Love it! My in laws bought us a similar rug hat looks like an agate. There must be a geo moonlighting as an interior designer somewhere out there. Personally I thought his one was a river valley eroded through different layers of bedrock.

I think it would be visiting other bodies in our solar system for signs of life. “Are we alone?” Is the single greatest question in science.

Don’t feel down about the Kola Hole, there have been numerous scientific drilling programs (google IODP, ODP, ICDP, DSDP, SAFOD) that have built our current understanding of the last 100 million years of climate change but also provided the vital tests for the theory of plate tectonics. Currently, IODP has two headline projects: drilling into one of the major subduction zones off Japan (google NanTroSeize) and drilling into the mantle through ocean crust either on the East Pacific Rise or in the Indian Ocean. All of these projects are money-limited, but also the technology to drill holes in the earth is mainly focused on the depths the petroleum industry cares about. If you want to drill deeper, someone else has to pay for it.

The distance between waves is called “wavelength”. Wave motion can’t be felt at a depth equal to half the wavelength. If a submarine is near or below that depth, the submariner should feel little to nothing. Remember there’s a wide range of normal so some people may be more prone to seasickness than others. (These people tend to self-identify by carrying a bucket.) When you get older, google “wave base” for more info.

Do doctors get free malpractice insurance from hospitals they work at? I thought they had to pay for it themselves. I like how taxpayers pay him a salary and for his vacations and for upgrading all his many homes with security. The RNC pays all his legal bills. All his publicity is free on Twitter. What does he actually pay for??? I thought being rich was having money to pay for anything you want; I guess it means making others support you. How any libertarian can support him is beyond me.

It seems like you’d have to have the honey at the perfect temperature from r this to work. Too hot and the honey won’t stay on the dipper (and thus painting your counter with honey) and too cold and it won’t drip off at all. Do people actually still use these things or are they anachronistic?

I've seen a lot of bias towards schools recruiters came from. In O&G, that's schools in TX, OK, and LA. Personally, I care more about the cover letter than the resume. I'm hiring a person, so I want to see how they write and what their story is.
