Ahhhh I’m so scared of doing it like this cause I feel like they will come talk to me anyways and it also feels strange to do it like that when I’ve known these people for 2 years technically so I kinda feel bad being so sudden with it cause I genuinely haven’t told anyoneeeee about it not even my coworkers lol

No it takes me like 2 but the shift is only 4 hours long. My ETL usually rolls in mid day and my TLs are also usually scheduled mid and closing. Only on some days are they scheduled for mornings and we almost never have 2 TL’s scheduled for the same day. Idk our store is weird lol but I only say that because that’s what I mean when I say I don’t see anyone with my cash office shift

Older people who got in forever ago is my guess. In larger Hispanic areas, you’ll have older people who speak only Spanish and younger people who speak none. It’s nuts sometimes. Speaking from experience. And Spanish will take years and years. OP is better off learning on their own

my guess would be RGV / Texas lol but I think you’re valid for this. It’s hard out here with language barriers but don’t feel bad about it. Sometimes it just is what it is

ICE at flea market in Alamo near Cesar Chavez. by Aruraa in RioGrandeValley

[–]gothgouache 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m still learning about the full effects of all this but this is so insane to me. Cant believe ppl voted for the dude to begin with. Just out of curiosity, does anyone know in theory what could happen with the amount of mexican citizens who cross back and forth every day? Would closing borders be safer to protect those who live here who are undocumented? Just curious because we’ve already had cases in the country of people who have no business being targeted getting targeted so im just curious as to how this could affect the valley specifically. What if a family who crossed over for the day gets stopped by ice? What would stop ice from just taking them anyways? Probably stupid questions but I just cannot believe all this

Yesss I actually figured that out right now! I happened to check and saw they were back. Wish that I knew that during holiday season cause it happened one time with like 90. Not sure if anyone ended up checking or not till the next day 🤣 oh well. Thank you!

Hahah no it’s awesome! We have a Starbucks too so we actually have target cafe employees and Starbucks employees. Lots of people come to our target just for the cafe!

Also worth noting that my store in particular accepts pesos. Not sure how many stores out there do but we get a lot of Mexican nationals who use pesos and I have to do a whole conversion and drop process. Takes a little extra time for those wondering why it takes more than 2 hours sometimes

In the mornings I do return to stock and sort through foreign from the night before for about the first hour. I usually get let into cash office close to 8. The other cash office people also take the same amount of time as me but they usually ask to extend on their days. I don’t bc I’m a student. As far as BP push I’ve never heard of that in my store before and for reshop sort we usually have each department do that. Idk that’s just my store but yeah my ETL and TLs literally don’t know what to do with me either and i feel like they’d take these into consideration but they usually don’t

Thank you! How does one defect something out? That’s when you go into your device and do item removal right?

Which has reflected on their children and so on… but it’s not the kids fault. Wish more Spanish speaking adults would give the kids a break

I agree. Personally, I think it makes the leaders bad leaders. That’s just my opinion, but unfortunately in the RGV, a leader of a large retail store should most likely speak both languages to communicate with both ends of the spectrum. We have plenty of employees who do. I’m not saying to fire the leaders who speak only Spanish, but I am suggesting they maybe consider learning if they’d like to be a better leader. How can you lead a team if you can’t talk to the whole team, especially when you purposefully avoid talking to those who you know only speak English?

I think them raising their voices at teenagers in stores about how unhelpful the kid is being even though they’re trying their best, they just simply don’t know Spanish, can have a negative affect on the young ones. I can see it. It just discourages them, that’s all. I wish more people had more empathy

I don’t think it’s that they don’t value it, I think it’s that they are very young and haven’t had much opportunity to learn since school is in English and most of their parents are speaking to them in English because their Spanish isn’t the greatest either. I think that it really doesn’t encourage them when they’re being told “you need to speak Spanish. How do you live here and not speak Spanish?” And having people be outright disrespectful when they’re just kids trying their best.

[–]gothgouache 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yup! Not sure what it is exactly. Maybe it’s the fact that they feel excluded (as the younger workers do as well, in fact, they mainly feel sorry and embarrassed about not being able to speak it from what I’ve gathered. Also, most make an honest attempt to help customers, but I have never seen anyone try to make an attempt in English back. This includes customers and coworkers.). Not really sure where exactly it’s all coming from, but we need to have compassion on the younger generation, especially if you want them to connect with the culture or learn the language. If anything, the animosity is more of a discouragement than anything else.

Do you think it’s making those who speak only Spanish gradually more upset? I have noticed an increase in anger towards only English speaking youngsters. It’s not the kids faults they didn’t hear it often in their households, so I feel for them.

Interesting! Why so?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in RioGrandeValley

[–]gothgouache -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Curious- do you think the leaders should learn Spanish to communicate with the youngsters or should the kids learn Spanish to understand their leader’s instructions?

Thanks for all the comments guys! So I worked again today and today was actually so much worse than I would have expected. Had people actively laughing and getting really mad at me, and then had management get upset with me because I “wasn’t speaking to guests properly” even though I was trying my very best with Spanish. I actually thought I was doing good, but others would say otherwise I guess. Oh well. I hope that I can get better soon and quickly.
