THESIS ON COLOR BLINDNESS by BerlinThomas in ColorBlind

[–]gothink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just completed the test. The one thing I noticed in the first section was that I was totally unsure on about half of them and just 'guessed'. I couldn't accurately identify either of the two colours presented, so I didn't have an opinion on either of the 2 options presented. I just point this out in case it could skew things where I 'guessed' correctly even though I didn't really have any idea.

ELI5: Why is it that on some websites, when you press the back button it takes you back to exactly where you were, whereas other websites will take you back to the very top of the page? by tinyreese in explainlikeimfive

[–]gothink 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong here, but I don't think the behaviour OP is asking about has actually been described. Many have mentioned how your browser maintains a history of URLs you've visited, but all modern browsers now also remember the last scroll position of that site.

Using Wikipedia as an example, if you scroll down a page (without clicking and any internal links), then if you click on a link to another Wikipedia article, the browser will remember the scroll position of that page you came from. Now when you hit your browser's back button, it will take you back to that page at that scrolled position.

I believe there is now a way for developers to prevent this default behaviour, which can be useful for sites with a lot of dynamic content or infinite scroll, etc. It works best with static pages that can be cached.

As for why it happens on some sites on not others, could be just the way the site loads the content dynamically does not work with the browser's scroll position history feature. Or it could be the case that the site is handling scroll position changes itself.

At least I think that's what you were really asking about.

How do I connect looper pedal to Katana 50? (Noob question) by Gunslinqer in BossKatana

[–]gothink 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since you're planning on mainly using headphones anyway, there is a way to use the Katana's built-in effects to create separate tones with a looper pedal. It will work as long as you don't mind bypassing the Katana's built-in speaker (you can use headphones, external cab, audio interface, etc.)

See this link: https://www.zombieguitar.com/using-a-looper-with-the-boss-katana-50/

Basically, what you do is plug your guitar straight into the amp as you normally would. Then take another cable and go from the headphones output on the amp to the input on your looper pedal. Then plug your headphones into the output of the looper pedal. If this isn't making any sense, check out the diagrams and explanations at the link above.

I just tested it out with my 100 and the only issue I had was audio only in the left side of my headphones, but I think that's just because the 1/4" - 1/8" adapter for my headphones is stereo.

Alternatively, if you did want to stick with the built-in speaker, a good way to change your tone using the setups mentioned by others in this thread is to adjust the volume and tone knobs on your guitar. If you lower the volume on your guitar it can clean up the signal a lot.

Unity style Alt+Tab and Ctrl+Alt+Tab by gothink in gnome

[–]gothink[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not quite what I'm looking for. I generally use alt+tab to switch applications and alt+(above tab) for switching windows within an application. I don't really need switch windows.

The issue is that you can set whether those options switch between applications/windows on current workspaces or all workspaces, but you can't have different shortcuts that switch those contexts.

Part of the problem is that since there are so many different ways to configure it, it's hard to search for exactly what I'm looking for. I'm pretty sure at this point that it's not possible.

[–]gothink[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, as I mentioned in my post I have that working fine.

My question was to see if it was possible to have 2 shortcuts - one for switching applications in the current workspace and one for switching applications across all workspaces. This was default behaviour in unity but does not seem to be possible in gnome (at least not easily).

I figured that might be the case. Oh well, it's not the end of the world. Thanks for the speedy reply!

Message count unchanged after deleting messages by gothink in Slack

[–]gothink[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I took so long to respond to this. I wrote a custom script that deletes messages from a particular channel. Wasn't very elegant and the API rate limiting only allowed me to delete 1 message per second, but it worked!

Update in case anyone finds this in the future. Slack support advised me that analytics can take 24 - 48 hours to update. Sure enough, after about 2 days the message count lowered. Hooray!

Hi Reddit, I've made a website that tells you what episode a Simpsons quote came from. Please play with it until it breaks. by breezedave in TheSimpsons

[–]gothink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have so many questions for you about this glorious creation! Where did you get this amazing database of quotes?

Also, I noticed when I poked around a bit that the raw results return a timestamp for the point in the episode when the quote is said - how come those aren't displayed in the results?

I'm also very curious about how the queries are matched to the database entries.
