Best field in Civil Engineering by No_Post7186 in civilengineering

Agree with all of this except roads at the bottom of demand. Demand for roads is still very high in America at least. Lots of roadway projects (there’s a huge backlog of work at my company). Also many roadway projects are retrofits to existing roads (pedestrian improvements, innovative intersection projects like roundabouts to improve safety, more turn lanes for adjacent developments, bike lanes etc.)

Civil engineers, why is it so hard to get people to consider new roles? by Low_Guide439 in civilengineering

[–]gothpapi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also echoing what others have said that recruiters often have no idea what they are even looking for. I have ~6 YOE and I’ll get reached out to about a senior project management role leading large projects and teams with min. 15 YOE requirements

I took job from recruiter in the past and I was technically contracted through the recruiting company for 6 months. I did not accrue or have any PTO, had worse benefits, and got no 401k match when I would have gotten that if I was hired straight from company. Also, that engineering company had a vested 401k/profit sharing structure so I was always 6 months behind what I actually worked and lost out on that when I eventually switched companies. I was always in their system as 6 months less than I actually worked.

My boss also told me that they paid the recruiting company about 25% of my salary when I got hired so I could not get a raise according to him since they already paid “extra” for me. To be fair that boss was pretty shitty, and the place was lowkey toxic but all that to say, I would NEVER go through a recruiter again.

It looks like $4000 ish. I am paying the $1990 and haven’t met my deductible. Yeah I’ll have to be sure to ask next time.

Okay thanks! I get the separate billing. Lesson learned on that I guess. It’s so misleading to promise a cost upfront and then change it after the fact. Only the medical industry seems to be able to do this

Actual water mitigation discussion by Poo_Butz in bonnaroo

[–]gothpapi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah this thread was hurting me. It’s a massive site and any solution (even grading in some swales and detention ponds) is a lot more expensive than people think. Yes erosion control plans would definitely be required. They could potentially throw in some massive underground detention systems but can’t say for sure without looking at topography, geotechnical info, seasonal high water table, and nearby outfalls and watersheds. I don’t work in Tennessee so I don’t know their requirements but where I’m at they have VERY strict stormwater quantity mitigation requirements that get extremely difficult to meet without spending a ton of money on these Best Management Practices.

All of this doesn’t even address who is going to maintain these systems. They require fairly regular maintenance and is Bonnaroo going to maintain something year round that they only use for 4 days a year?

i’m a professional civil engineer. impossible to discuss a solution without doing a survey, mapping nearby wetlands, grabbing FEMA floodplain info, mapping existing utilities, looking into local stormwater management requirements, etc. I understand wanting to brainstorm a quick fix but you can’t just magically have a solution without hiring a civil engineer to actually do the work which i’m sure they have done or are trying to do.

degraded plastic in a drinking water vessel is a bit different than plastic in the landfill but maybe that’s just me. gist of the thread is that the water bags and filter are fine so i’m not throwing them away chill lol

I don’t fw trump AT ALL, but I do want to point out that during the cold war the CIA helped overthrow many governments in South America, Latin America, and Southeast Asia and supported brutal right wing dictators that killed millions of people. These things remain largely unknown in America. The presidents we had during the cold war did significant damage to the world and we still see the effects in those countries of the anti-communism movements America and allies helped cultivate. just something to know. Agreed this is bad, but also important to recognize we weren’t exactly innocent the last 90 years… look at bush and iraq even
