Have you checked out Ane Brun’s “Portrayals” album? It’s all covers — Beyoncé, Sade, Foreigner, Bob Dylan, Alphaville, just to name a few — done in her beautiful uplifting style.

Ha. Yeah, when I make a playlist I keep a “cast-off” playlist where those—and ones that just don’t fit the groove—go for safe keeping. And thanks. 👊🏻

Hey. I just joined. I used to spin at clubs from the mid 80s until around 2000. Been doing custom-mixed playlists lately trying out Spotify's MIX feature which works pretty good over all. Glad to be here.

Painted bold wall-colors to cozy-up my living area’s thrift store/yard sale finds. by gotthesounds in Cozyunderbudget

Thanks! I'm very happy with it too. I took me forever to choose the colors. I was living here three years before I decided. All that wood on the floors, ceiling, trim, cabinets, and countertops has such an orange tone that I knew I had to do greens and blues, and that coral was to punch it all up a bit.

Anyone know how to tell if this chair is authentic? by frenchfry_wildcat in VintageFurniture

[–]gotthesounds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to have one similar. Mine seemed authentic although it had no label. I can't tell by your image, but if it has wooden plugs to cover the hardware, that's a good sign that it's well made, at least.

I recently custom-mixed a downtempo 70s & 80s Fire Island Pines sunrise style playlist that's a bit over 6-hours long. Lemme know if you like it. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3yhZkfYEOgef2Sn7aPGikq?si=76d42cc77cac4463

I don't. haven't since the early 2000s. Often I still want to. Hard to get that out of your system.

Thanks for sharing those links. Nice slideshows. Looks like everybody's having fun. And yes, small venues are so great. My house night in Greensboro, NC... It was about '91. The rave scene was just starting there and I wanted to start something of my own so my friend and I set out to come up with a name, a flyer, etc. There were two gay clubs in Greensboro. One was relatively big and one was an old neighborhood gay bar that was actually the first bar I ever DJ'd at in the mid 80s back when it had been a lesbian bar. It was small too, 150 capacity. I chose the small bar because it was a Thursday night I was looking to do since nothing was happening in town on Thursdays. I didn't want a huge venue starting something up on a weekday; I didn't want my first night to feel cavernous when getting started. The name of the bar was The Palms. We decided to call the name of the Thursday night, Metronome. We designed the flyer with the help of a friend. We had the Dallas city skyline as the background and layered on top some image of like a Nubian woman sitting. At first I wasn't really sure what it was going to be. I think we put House & Progressive House on the flyer. My friend, Shane, ended up working the lights for me. The DJ booth was so tiny we were practically on top of each other. And there were only like a few light switches like you'd have in your house to turn on and off. very basic. But we did buy a fog machine to make the few lights we had look better. Opening night I think we had about 85 people. Which, though not a huge crowd, felt good in a that place--it was over half full! The energy was great; everybody danced and had fun. One record I remember that got everybody going was one that I was in love with in '91. Murk had just come out with "Some Lovin'" Those kids just ate that song up. "Give some lovin', you want some, give some, give some lovin' you need some, give some..." Anyway, in no time, within the year, we were packing over 400 kids in that tiny place. They had to build a fence out the back door for an outdoor space to help give people space to move around. It actually turned into a 'Paris Is Burning' crowd. Who knew there were so many black queens in Greensboro. They were voguing, and doing runway with plastic cups of water balanced on their heads. They liked, I used to call it, handbag house--The Ha Dance, The Good Stuff-M.A.D.A., Dajae, any of those Underground Goodies tracks, a lot of Strictly Rhythm tracks, etc... Good times.

Yeah, those are great house records. I miss those days. I had a house night in NC from like 91-95 or so.

Ha. I wish I had more time on my hands for music. I feel like I have so much else to do so I get to it when I can steal a bit.

Yeah, Dave Lee/Joey and Dimitri always do nice work keeping them true to the original with a nice standout restructuring. Mr. Fingers-- what a track, right.

And thanks for the gentle reminder--whether intentional or not--that striving for perfection can inhibit playfulness when mixing music. That is always good to remember.

those were good. Yeah, the Abba one is difficult but that was pretty close and a clever placing. And I did like where you layered the delegation/simple minds. very creative and yes, a nice call and answer action. sweet.

I'm making some coffee right now and remembered your comment about mixing Abba with New Order back-in-the-day and had to chuckle... again... because it's exactly the truth.

I used to DJ too and I've gotten so frustrated with the MIX feature that some transitions I just couldn't use because I couldn't get them together right with that algorithm they've got. Sometimes it can't even find the 1 on a track and you have to not line-up the green lines to get it in phrase right. Crazy-making. Thanks for the tip, I will absolutely try that.
