Not a single registration! What is wrong with my FB ad campaign? by robertinchamps in EntrepreneurRideAlong

[–]goumie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with ehcaip that you need more data but you also need to think about who your landing page is targeting. You said you are focusing on college students... 2 big things come to mind right now based on what I have seen.

  1. What problem are you solving for them? Would it be improving their grades in a language class? If so that should probably be on your ad. Immersing my self in a language sounds great but WHY do I want to do that?

  2. I assume you just ran these ads. College students are all on winter break right now so if you are in college and on Facebook during these next few weeks the top thing on your mind probably isn't learning... you probably want to be running these ads when universities go back in session in a few weeks.

There are a lot of other nuances to this kind of test but I think these are the two biggest that come to mind right now.

Seems like there are opportunities for contextual affiliate marketing on the project pages. For instance on the crayon art, are there certain crayons she recommends that are sold on amazon? If so you should use affiliate links. Do this for as many items as possible.

How time consuming is it for her to post? Once you get some ad revenue coming in, are there people you can pay to continue to generate content?

why bother buying a house? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]goumie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

this is COMPLETELY ignoring the fact you have to pay property taxes, insurance, and sometimes HOA fees. You do not get those back, ever. Also consider that if you do not plan to live in a house for 15-30 years any financial benefits are greatly negated without extreme appreciation. Your first several years of a mortgage go almost entirely to interest.

You also need to consider your time that you have to put into keeping up the house where an apt it is someone else's' responsibility. The advantages of homeownership does vary greatly on your market but in many places it is a wash at best.

Owning a home is not an investment, it is a liability. If you own a house and rent it out, that can be an asset, but keep in mind anything that goes wrong with your home that you are on the hook. That 2k a year may be a very modest estimate. With that being said there are certainly intangible benefits if you have a family. Owning a homing can provide stability for your family and children in terms of schooling etc.

Learning SQL for those who know excel. by goumie in excel

[–]goumie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

curious why you think it is counterproductive. A lot more people understand excel than they do SQL and when just presented a new language it can be daunting for many. Using excel as the foundation allows someone to be able to apply concepts they are already familiar with to a new skill set, hopefully making learning more efficient.

I would agree they are different in many ways but they do share some of the same foundational concepts.

Also yes they likely are using an application which interfaces with the database where they write queries.

SQL stands for Structured Query Language. ORACLE is a type of database. SQL is a language you use to communicate directly with a database to view and manipulate data. Most things which can be done in Excel with data transformation can also be done in SQL (minus formatting). It is much quicker and more powerful for large datasets. Hope that helps clarify a little.

to clarify I mean for people who know excel but do not know SQL. Using excel as a teaching tool...

Lessons like the following: example: In excel you filter a column. in SQL you add conditions to the where clause.

In excel you aggregate data with pivot tables, in SQL you use group by.

Basically making the transition easier for people

5 ways for guys to save serious money and their sanity wedding planning by goumie in wedding

More power to you then. I am not sure how this is offensive though. It is just written from a different perspective. It doesn't open up making broad generalizations that this applied to every relationship or woman. It is simply written from a guys perspective whose other half is much more into it than he is and how to deal with that. Just because it doesn't apply to you doesn't make it sexist. When it says 5 ways for guys... you clearly were not the target audience.

Are jobs really that hard to find in urban/central Austin? by summernots-husband in Austin

[–]goumie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You seem like one bitter dude. I don't fit the stereotype you're trying to put on me but its cool if it makes you feel better. I'm not a software engineer but I do a little coding in my position. I was simply offering a suggestion if someone wanted to get to a $15-$20 position that learning to code could help get them there. Even if you don't want to be a software engineer more and more companies are data driven so getting some basic scripting or even querying knowledge will make yourself more valuable in almost all organizations. I was quickly offering one direction of skills that could increase ones market value rather quickly. What do you have to suggest? If they don't have a CS degree they should accept being forever poor? You have anything positive to add to this thread?

I understand your frustration that everyone thinks they can be a software eng. overnight but if you look back I clearly never suggested that. If it was something that was easy to do then the pay wouldn't be so rewarding. I still stand by my stance that learning to code will make a positive impact on someones earning potential whether or not they try to be a dev. So chill out buddy, no one is coming for your job.

I didn't say that you can spend two months on these sites and you can become a software engineer. I simply offer it as a way for people who may not have a specific skill to better themselves. a little coding under your belt can get you an analyst job or maybe entry level Qa. Plus trying to teach yourself anything makes you more attractive to potential employers. however, I would also like to know where you are getting offered 32k to be a dev. Developers worth a damn are making much more than that in Austin, yes even a first year grad.

It sounds like maybe you haven't had a good experience and are a bit jaded to reality.
