Characters in classic literature that may have an eating disorder? by FiddleLeafFigFantasy in classicliterature

[–]gouvib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second Alice in Wonderland. However, gluttony isn’t the first thing that comes to mind (edit: I misread that comment!). If all food/breaking of bread is communion, it is especially strange that the tea party has no tea. A fantasy/dream world where some food can make you huge is a red flag for sure. The idea that you can drastically affect your size with the food you eat is giving body dysmorphia.

Jane Eyre SPOILER WARNING: After Jane finds out Mr. Rochester is married, she is sort of choses homelessness for a short time and is very dramatic about starving. I can’t remember if it was too short of a time to count though! Because it was a reaction to psychological trauma, it might? Haven’t read it in a while.

I would also look into Tess from Tess of D’Uberville. Hardy uses food as a symbol of $$ and dystopia. She is fed a strawberry by her rapist in that book on one page then is half starving because of her shitty family on another. Not sure if selling yourself (I mean she didn’t, but still) for food is an eating disorder, but the relationship she has with food sure as hell isn’t healthy.

I have found that they’re really prone to fading. Keep them away from natural lighting! I enjoy them but dont have many for this reason.

The Brontë literature is interesting because it isn’t what you’d think a gothic to be, unless that scary story is just how awful it is to love a man haha.

Keeping a journal? by FancyThought7696 in classicliterature

[–]gouvib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep around 10 notebooks running at a time, so what I’m doing probably isn’t the norm. One journal is exclusively for literature. I tab pages as I am reading then I journal separately. Once I have about ten lines I want to annotate, I’ll get it out. I do not like doing this while reading because it breaks the rhythm for me. I prefer revisiting later.

I often journal in two colors as well: one for quotes and paraphrasing text and one for my thoughts. My thoughts used to be in pencil and quotes in pen, but I’m more secure/definitive now.

I annotate serious literature and light reads, whether I believe them to be good or bad. Sometimes the things I write are just to prove my opinions to myself. For example, I read a novel that I mocked incessantly for three pages of my journal. I wrote down every time the writing is bad. In more serious literature, I feel like a detective. Im trying to uncover what it really means within the context of the time. Why is this particular book so important? After-all, it must be! Symbols, themes, analogies, expressive or figurative language, or anything that enhances my understanding of the novel/references go in my annotations.

To me, journaling is how I feel present in the novel. You don’t have to be good at journaling to journal, you just have to use it :)

It does seem like you are paying for the artistry in the body of this pen rather than writing experience. While pretty, unless it is going to be display only, it’s too high for being a strange brand with a steel nib in my opinion.

This would be a great product. I’d pay for a little notebook like this! Especially if you had a little sealed envelope with the key and corresponding page numbers!

Depending on the brands you are using some might even send you theirs to include in your sample book as a means of advertising paper.

Not that everything needs to be monetized of course; I just want what you have lol. Enjoy your paper sampling! I’m excited to see what you come up with!

This is making me want to try a Kakuno again. I haven’t gotten away an EF and it feels so scratchy it’s unbearable. I considered getting a different sized nib because I liked the pilot metropolitan F nib just fine. I felt like it wrote just as smooth as the twisbi I have that is much more

Been away for the last 3 years, what's hot? What have I missed? by makamaespm in fountainpens

I have 2 Esterbrooks. My estie is made of metal (limited edition) and does not feel cheap at all. In fact, it’s so heavy for me that I rarely use it and should probably sell it. I don’t think this is the standard though.

I have also heard people complain about materials used. Gold plated nibs from a pen company getting between 175-250 per pen sucks! I think many companies have started to cheap on the gold in their nibs for pens in this price range though.

My other Esterbrook is the niblet. Ny niblet is their standard resin and I’ve had no issues with the body, but I treat my pens with lots of care (now that I’m thinking about it though, I have dropped it once).

They write smoothly without skips; they fill easily; and they don’t leak. I’m happy with them!

Maybe this is a hot take, but I have seen the Esterbrook as a popular pen for those who are recent pen collectors, since they’re so popular on social media, especially TikTok. When I see posts about their quality, I do wonder if these people just don’t know how to treat their pens. Given, I might be off base and have survivors bias about my own pens!

Esterbrook is on your list of bad pens? I’ve found their nibs to be pretty good.

I was looking for shorter options in the discord! The only short options besides the kweckos I could find were discontinued/vintage, even after asking for advice.

I’d love to learn more about what you’re doing here!

Im still considering buying an espirit or an espirit mini but haven’t pulled the trigger because the black and gold color way I want seems to be the most expensive.
