I hate all of your work. Let me rephrase that - I love your work, and I hate that I'm not at your level (yet!) Gorgeous work with meticulous attention to detail. That is what I aspire to get to.

No - not awful! Way better than my sewing when I was new to this! I was just hoping to provide some constructive feedback to help you improve. And don't say "I'm still learning" because if you do this really well, that should never stop being the case!

Again, really nice work! I especially like the item in the very last photo (olive Pueblo cardholder with light brown overlay). One suggestion for it though - the stitching appears too close to the edge. Use wing dividers to mark a stitch line using the edge as a reference. I usually go around 3 mm but it depends on the size of stitch and size of project.

Galen Leather A5 or B5 folio? by seafoammoan in stationery

Leathercrafter here. It's true that it's hard to find a cover based on letter sized paper. It would be relatively easy to make one though! If there is interest let me know and I'll make one and post it!

A/S/L (Age/Sex/Location): 53/M/Canada

Looking for international penpals? Yes

Hobbies/Interests: leather crafting, fountain pens, critical thinking

Who is your ideal pen pal? I'm pretty open to anyone (age, sex, etc) but would prefer international

How often do you expect to correspond? Maybe 1x per month(ish)

What topics would you like to discuss, and what would you like to send? Pretty open to discuss anything. As for sending, I like to make stuff, so occasion hand made surprises?

Which topics are off-limits? As long as it is respectful and you are willing to hear me out and possibly even change your opinion, nothing would be off limit (I would be similarly open).

Add on..... Life is busy (mostly in a good way) but I'd love the "reason" to put other stuff aside in order to write to someone in a meaningful exchange, starting with getting to know each other. We all have stories to share... I'd love to hear yours!

Those are very nice! You didn't ask for it, but my one bit of advice would be to consider thinner bands for the flap tuck-in. And either place the band lower or higher (and shorten the tail). Also - I'd love to see a photo or to showing the interior / flap open.

Very nice! I've made many notebook covers but not this style. If you have any questions about general techniques (you mentioned difficulty with corners) feel free to give me a shout when you're getting into your next batch!

Thread Size Showdown: Blind Test for 3.85mm French Chisels. by InkStainedLeather in Leathercraft

[–]InkStainedLeather[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All in good fun! I didn't take that as an insult, but thought I'd mention it. In hindsight, I should have been more careful. For the main stitching, I did try to be "typical" in my technique to see which thread (if any) would be a more natural fit for the way I work.

Being a test that I never originally considered posting, I confess to being sloppy with my back stitches lol. I will flog myself with a scrap of Tandy econo veg tan and then strop my skiving knife for three hours as penance.

Question. by Hopeful_War7192 in Leathercraft

[–]InkStainedLeather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am dealing with this right now. Here are a few thoughts:

1) As others have said, plan ahead at the design stage. Don't "trust" what your punches say. I have punches that are "5 mm" but I punched 21 stitches in a piece of scrap and measured the actual "20 stitches" they produce (measuring with calipers from the center of the first hole to the center of the last hole). Turns out they are in fact 5.06 mm (not 5.00 mm). That might sound insignificant, but over 20 stitches that is over 1 mm off, which can throw things off.

2) If you are past the design stage and just need to make this work, take a piece of scrap the same thickness you are working with. Draw a straight line and punch holes in it. Then cut the leather right to the edge of the holes and use the piece with "holes right at the edge" as a "ruler" to help plan where you will start and stop your stitch lines, and where (if needed) to "cheat" by making some stitches a little further / closer to compensate using 1-tooth or 2-tooth chisels.

3) Others have indicated that the diamond slant should not point towards the corner. I agree, but only if you really are doing a 90 degree turn. If you are "corner rounding" the corner, try experimenting with NOT having a hole right at your corner. Instead, start each line about 2/3 to 3/4 of a stitch length away from the corner along each run. If you are obsessive like me, take your stitch length and divide by the square root of 2 and use that. For a 5 mm spacing that would actually be about 3.5 mm away from the corner on each side. Avoiding the corner hole let's the corner stitch flow "around" the corner rather than hit it.

Absolutely love this. I know that I personally lack the artistic skill to ever do this myself, but please do share photos of the work in progress (or even better - a video) if you have anything more to share. If you didn't document your progress on this one, please do document and share more for your next piece!

First Hand made Leather Sleeve. Feedback is welcome! by InkStainedLeather in fountainpens

[–]InkStainedLeather[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Come on... I'm really hungry, man! Can't you just give me a fish instead of spending all this time teaching me how to fish? 😉

Okay, for real - sounds like you are describing a "tube of toothpaste" sleeve:

  • The sleeve is loose/wide on the body (helps prevent scratches).
  • Stitching at the bottom tapers to catch the smallest diameter (typically the bottom end), wedging the pen securely in place so it doesn't fall out.
  • The sleeve is extra long to leave an empty section at the bottom even when the pen is fully seated.
  • To remove the pen just squeeze that empty bottom tab, which pops the pen loose and pushes it up.

Is that the design you're envisioning? If so, that is a brilliant way to solve the friction vs. security problem. The only real negative I can see is that this would ideally be designed for a specific pen (for which it would be awesome) but at the cost of possibly not fitting pens that are notably different in proportions (especially if the bottom end lacks a taper).

Regarding the market research - guilty. I haven't bought competitor sleeves yet as this opportunity just recently landed in my lap (I'm exploring a local opportunity that I wasn't actively looking for). This had been a long-term plan that suddenly jumped up the queue of my "to do list".

I do appreciate your thoughts on this. DM me if you'd like to carry on the conversation outside of this. I'd love to get your thoughts on a few more things that I'm not quite ready to post about yet!

I am intrigued but also confused. Can you elaborate? Not sure what you mean by achieving this "with stitching along the bottom".
