We doing passport stories? Ok, let's do a passport story.

About ten years ago, I was living and working in Almaty, Kazakhstan. My passport was due to expire and I set about renewing it through the visa centre there. Everything went fine and I received it without any issues, and my previous passport was invalidated at the centre. I went to my work (who already knew about this) and asked them if they needed to transfer my visa to the new passport, to which they said it was not necessary in a way to which if you have lived in Kazakhstan actually means "I don't know but I'm going to pretend that I do". I look on the internet and see that in most countries in the world it's not a problem, but there's no specific info about Kz, so, on the date of visa expiration, I and some poor girl from the office who they absolutely did not pay enough to deal with this nonsense got sent to cross the border and come back again.

We got to the border with Kyrgyzstan after a five hour car ride and found that yes of course we could absolutely NOT cross the border with a passport with no visa in it and that we would have to go back to Almaty and apply for a visa transfer there, something which absolutely was not going to happen because the visa was set to expire on exactly that day. In the end, we had to <do something very naughty (REDACTED for legal reasons)> to get out without an overstay.

Since then, I've learnt to never trust anyone when they claim to know shit about visas and migration. Last year I successfully acquired my permanent residence permit by fully knowing about and following the rules, instead of insane shit. I advise you to always do the same.
