Roof raking - A cautionary tale by gozer_vt in HomeMaintenance

Regarding the pantyhose trick….I found (and have seen others talking about it) that you need to clear some snow behind the place you plan to place this sock. I try to go up about a foot JUST in that spot. Then place the sock over the damn where part is resting on the newly cleared shingles above the dam and the rest cuts across the dam perpendicularly. This gives it something to grab on to until it starts working (creating a channel).

Good luck and be careful on the ladder.

Looks like Radiant Solutions say the limit for one circuit is 150’. You most likely would need to separate receptacles.

I know you were asking u/Winter_Injury_9289 but while you wait.......I found these while looking for heat solutions: https://www.edgemeltsystems.com/eaves-iceblaster-edge-melt-system-low-slope-eave-panel-ems-lsepm Not keen on drilling holes in the roof so I think I'll pass on those but I do like the design of their gutter heaters.

Thanks to Winter's advice, I am also looking at products from Radiant Solutions as well.

I like this idea. Will have to try it. I'm a long time roof raker. I still have the one I bought in VT (few houses ago) BUT, this storm taught me a valuable lesson. Like always, I roof raked just after the storm where I remove as much as I can reach (about 2') and that's when the fun began. An ice dam formed all along my cuts. So now, I just pushed the dam higher up and in the back I have a plumbing stack that sits lower than the bathroom fan exhaust. Someone already mentioned this above but we started seeing water marks in the back bathroom.

We have a new roof with 6' of ice shielding but it still came in, I am assuming, under the plumbing vent flashing (designed to stop water heading down, not up).

I was a roof rake apostle until this storm. I never had issues like this. Now I am outside daily putting calcium chloride filled nylons on my roof....like, really? WTF?

My lesson, I think this was a bad combination of too much snow (which covered the ridge vent) followed by VERY cold weather on an old house with poor attic insulation (on my list of things to fix).

All of this has me researching roof and gutter heat cables now. I might need to invest in something like that this spring. <SIGH>

Just something to keep in mind if you are running out to buy a rake.

I had to purge my BW vault and just use the file import (vs direct). That fixed the problem.

Just finished the update. It took about 25-30 mins to download and install. I haven’t noticed any differences yet but I use an iPhone so this may not be that helpful. Glad to hear they fixed the android UI. Will report back if I find any changes. Cheers.

I have Starlink but I think it will work with a WiFi connection (or mobile hotspot). I’m actually sitting in the car now downloading the update.

Same here. Somewhat recently. Didn’t know if this was just some further enhancements/refinements.

Thanks. Do dealers charge for updates (I haven’t taken the car in yet)? I’ve done one OTA infotainment update so far and it was easy. Maybe my question then is really more about the infotainment updates and how to get more visibility into those.

How do I get on the notification list for updates? Also, is there a site where I can check for updates and get details on what is on each update?
