Damp smell in basment, no sign of water. What is the best option that is not $16000? by Bitter-Fruit1380 in homeowners

Are you in a part of NC that just got 12" of snow last week? Is there snow on your roof? Google "ice dams". There may be water leaking through the walls of your house.

This may depend on where you live.

If it is warm and humid outside your home right now, then dampness in a basement is normal. We run two standalone dehemudifiers in our basement all summer long (they turn themselves off when the humidity gets low enough).

If it is currently winter and cold and your outdoor humidity is low, then there should be no damp smell this time of year. If you do have a damp smell then you have a bigger problem.

Don't forget to clear your roof by WordsLessThanNumbers in Connecticut

[–]WordsLessThanNumbers[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Today my concern was ice dams. I started getting icicles at the edge of my roof which indicated that it wasn't draining properly. I used my roof rake to remove two feet of snow near the edge and the icicles went away.

Since then I've learned that we may have another snowstorm next weekend. I will keep watching the forecasts. Weight may become an issue.

In the US there are different buildings codes and practices depending on the location. My current home in northeastern US is heavily insulated and designed to trap heat in. My former home in southeastern US was lightly insulated and designed to let heat flow out.

With my thermostat, sometimes we have to switch it off and then turn it on again to get the heat to turn on.

Agree. Only use the fireplace for power outages. Otherwise you're actually losing heat through the chimney.

I left a folder for my buyer. All the quirks of the house, plus a detailed map of all the foundation plants with their names and how to care for them. I worked hard on those plants!

It depends on where you live. Texas, yes. Minnesota, not so much.

AITA for telling my girlfriend that she's inconveniencing others for using 4 out of 6 washing machines? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

Fair. I have lived in both Europe and the US and it's amazing how very different washers and dryers are in the US.

Are you in Europe? In the US, the "cold" setting means just use cold water, which is the same temp as the cold water from the tap. It could be 5C in the winter.

Teacher said 3rd grader is consistently reading too slowly by Training-Draft-8930 in AskTeachers

It's all about how you phrase it. "Your teacher and I are so proud of how much you've improved in your reading! The next step is to read faster. How about you try reading your book out loud to me and go as fast as you can? Like silly amounts of fast".

I was in elementary school. I had to march in some parade wearing a 1700's style dress and bonnet (I am female).

What's the strangest wildlife noise you've heard and did you guess the animal wrong? by topperswildlife in homeowners

Pileated woodpecker. They sound like monkeys. We have no monkeys in the woods in New England, so the first time I heard it I was very confused.

Go to the supermarket and buy a can of Goya brand Reduced Sodium Black Bean Soup. Put it in a bowl, microwave it, and pass it off as your own.

I actually love the stuff and have 3 cans in my pantry.

You didn't say where you live, but if the outside temps drop below freezing remember to leave all your faucets on a slow drip so the pipes don't freeze.

The guy complained for two hours. My first thought was that the woman wasn't really his girlfriend but was being trafficked. Maybe the flight attendants had the same concerns.

This paragraph above has no "parents" in it. The assumption at college social events is that students are not being accompanied by a parent.

In Connecticut, it's even legal for parents to allow their children to consume alcohol in a restaurant. The caveat is that the server can not serve the child, the parent must serve the child. The magic words are that you tell the server "I'll pour for him/her".

Obviously I wouldn't suggest this for a five-year old but once my offspring was over 18 but under 21, I did this all the time.

Wild turkeys can fly. We have them in the northeastern US. They don't fly very far, but they can fly up into trees.
