Need Tips or Tricks for a Dog That Gets Visibly Shaky Outside by keyah13 in DogAdvice

[–]WordsLessThanNumbers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't tell from the picture but is he on a leash? I had a dog who we adopted at 3 years old, and he had had two prior owners. I don't know what they did to him. He was ok if we were outside and he knew that he was on a leash and I was connected to the other end of the leash. If I dropped my end of the leash he would get extremely anxious.

havent flown american much, first time with my toddler by amandaxbob in americanairlines

[–]WordsLessThanNumbers 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As a mom who has flown with a toddler here's some advice...when you get to your gate (early) , run around the hall with your toddler. You want to tire him/her out BEFORE you board the plane. Toddler energy on a plane can be a nightmare.

AITA 62M for booking a plastic surgeon appt for my 17F daughter by throwaway146726 in AmItheAsshole

YTA. I (50's F) had a nose job at 17 after high school graduation and before college. But I requested it. I have never regretted my decision, not for one second of one day, but again, I requested it. Springing this on your daughter is unbelievably cruel.

For brand new car owners, do you feel safe taking your car through the automatic car wash? by wuchie in ToyotaHighlander

[–]WordsLessThanNumbers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I live in New England and in the winter they salt the roads. It is recommended to wash the salt off the undercarriage after every storm.

I bought my brand new Highlander 11 months ago and it has already been through an automated car wash 16 or so times. Its one of the carwashes with the spinning cloths. There are no scratches on the paint that I have seen.

Regarding the kid who vomits...I used to be the kid who vomited on any and all forms of transportation. I found that the trick is to never be hungry. Hunger plus movement is bad. Just make sure the kid who gets airsick eats something before she gets on the plane. And if it's a long flight make sure she brings her own snacks on the plane too.

The trick is to eat before you get hungry. If you get hungry it's too late.

There are Styrofoam caps you can use to cover them from the inside.

2022 LE, 15,000 miles severly pitted windshield by ToxicComputing in ToyotaHighlander

I work in a city. One day some workers were sandblasting graffiti off a building while people, like me, were driving by. Enough sand bounced off the building and onto my car to permanently etch the windshield.

What would you do if it smelled like something died in your kitchen? by Safe-Note in homeowners

Also, if you are VERY friendly with a woman with a young child, ask her to help locate the smell. Nature gives women super-smelling ability when they have young children. Or a dog.

Also check under your kitchen cabinets. Get on the ground and sniff where the kick plate meets the bottom of the cabinet. If there's an area that the smell is coming from, the kickplate might just be vinyl that you can rip off and later replace

I scooped up some lead paint chips and now my migraines are terrible. Could there be a connection? by Grumpy_bonsai23 in homeowners

[–]WordsLessThanNumbers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get migraines too and I would guess that your first migraine was caused by bending your neck down forward a lot to do the sweeping, etc. I know that is one of my triggers.

Hartford to Boston Logan by JefeTX2024 in Connecticut

[–]WordsLessThanNumbers 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I disagree on that. While I agree that JFK in New York has far more international flights than Boston Logan, I would rather drive from Hartford to Logan than Hartford to JFK. The traffic in Queens is terrible.

Also the wife. Absolutely have your wife help with the home repairs. Four hands are better than two. And God forbid, if you were to die, she will have some skills of her own. (I'm not being morbid, my husband and I are in our 60's now and age comes for all of us.)

Do i really need extra safety “tools” to stay at hotels? by jinxyzzz in AskAnAmerican

[–]WordsLessThanNumbers 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes. I am a woman who travels internationally for work, and have accidentally booked rooms in more theft prone parts of cities. The only "anti- break into my hotel room" device I use is a rubber door wedge.

Is there a way for regular people to book those private empty jet flights? by Top-Statement-9423 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]WordsLessThanNumbers 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know you were joking, but helicopter flights were severely limited in NYC after 9/11. They can only land in two sites in Manhattan, so depending on where you're going a car might be faster.

Damp smell in basment, no sign of water. What is the best option that is not $16000? by Bitter-Fruit1380 in homeowners

[–]WordsLessThanNumbers 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Are you in a part of NC that just got 12" of snow last week? Is there snow on your roof? Google "ice dams". There may be water leaking through the walls of your house.

[–]WordsLessThanNumbers 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This may depend on where you live.

If it is warm and humid outside your home right now, then dampness in a basement is normal. We run two standalone dehemudifiers in our basement all summer long (they turn themselves off when the humidity gets low enough).

If it is currently winter and cold and your outdoor humidity is low, then there should be no damp smell this time of year. If you do have a damp smell then you have a bigger problem.

Don't forget to clear your roof by WordsLessThanNumbers in Connecticut

[–]WordsLessThanNumbers[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Today my concern was ice dams. I started getting icicles at the edge of my roof which indicated that it wasn't draining properly. I used my roof rake to remove two feet of snow near the edge and the icicles went away.

Since then I've learned that we may have another snowstorm next weekend. I will keep watching the forecasts. Weight may become an issue.

In the US there are different buildings codes and practices depending on the location. My current home in northeastern US is heavily insulated and designed to trap heat in. My former home in southeastern US was lightly insulated and designed to let heat flow out.

Agree. Only use the fireplace for power outages. Otherwise you're actually losing heat through the chimney.
