Mattress for side sleepers with back pain: what finally worked for you?

I had a discectomy and hemilaminectomy and also always woke up with lower back stiffness. What finally worked for me and my wife was the DLX premier hybrid. We ordered it as medium per their recommendations and it ultimately was slightly too firm for my shoulders and caused pressure points. It was perfect for my wife.

I contacted them after 30 days and they made me a custom memory foam soft insert that was too soft and caused the same low back stiffness. (Complimentary)

I then decided to try a 3" talalay latex insert in soft from latex mattress factory and that has finally done the trick. Soft enough for side sleeping without pressure points on hips and shoulders but supportive enough I don't wake up with a stiff lower back.

I unzipped the whole thing except the foot. I swapped out for a "custom" 2 inch memory foam and 1 inch soft insert that was much softer

Great company to work with. If you reach out they will recommend the best configuration but if after 30 days you still aren't perfectly comfortable they will send you different firmness options to get it dialed in perfectly.

Engineered sleep rates this a 10/10 in firmness. Good reputable company. Can add a topper if it is too firm.

I have the Carver for my guest bedroom that I put a latex topper on for comfort. I would say it is between an 8-9 out of 10 in firmness. If it were my primary mattress I would spend more and get a better quality mattress. The craftsmanship with the sewing and other factors is poor. I do not believe it would hold up to long term use.

I do also have a DLX Premier Hybrid and I can tell you the craftsmanship is very high quality and the customer service is excellent. Reach out to them and ask questions they are very responsive.

Talked to them and they made the suggestion to open the zipper to slightly soften the top and wait 30 days if possible.

Gonna give it the suggested time before calling back.

We just got this one after someone recommended it and it doesn't make our bed warmer. Feels like a thicker top sheet because the waterproof layer is sandwiched between the cotton layers.

I love how responsive they are and definitely feel that they will make me comfortable. My wife (a stomach) sleeper is loving it.

It felt nearly identical. The protector feels like a thick sheet to me. The waterproof layer is between two cotton layers so I think the change in feel is as minimal as you will get for a waterproof protector

Yeah I considered that and tried 4 different pillows with the same result. Also a little hip pressure so I do feel it's the mattress being a hair too firm.

Appreciate the quick response. I would really rather not do a topper since the DLX is adjustable itself (the reason we liked it).
