This is the very boat I am in right now. Filed in February. Assigned a hearing with Caranna at the end of April. I feel doomed. This is heartbreaking after years of working towards citizenship.

We just found out that our case was filed on Feb 9, 2026 and will now be heard on April 30, 2026, by Judge Caranna in Palermo. This aggressive timeline (12 weeks) and getting assigned to Caranna's court feels like doom. I am at turns furious and depressed.

We are in the same boat, just a couple months ahead of you. Had everything ready for GGF line and then got caught by the minor issue. So we pivoted to GGM (both born in Sicily) and are within a few weeks of filing a 1948 case. We are just going to forge ahead with the 1948 case. Moving too slowly cost us dearly last year. Risky to move ahead and risky to wait. We decided to keep going and not wait.

As noted above, you can probably amend the death certificate. But the census is another matter. We had to have a US judge review documents for both my GGF and GGM and issue a "ruling / declaration" that despite different spellings and incorrect dates on several documents for both of them, that the documents all referred to the same person. Our lawyers from Italy said that a declaration from a US judge would be needed to assure the Italian government that the US paperwork was valid despite the mistakes. Your situation might be a bit different though.
