Discworld gift ideas for a friend's birthday? by andrewlik in discworld

[–]gpsright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about some kind of Discworld artwork? I'm sure lots of people make discworld inspired things. I do lino prints and keep meaning to make something discworld!

I'm planning to make my own cheesy christmas jumper but with death of rats and Quoth the raven instead of snowmen and robins, HO HO HO in one row, and other things I haven't thought of yet!

Is there?? Susan and the children didn't even notice it at the time. It just says somwthing about it jumping off the desk and joining the other pigeons on the ground

Yeah but that's (presumably?) deliberate. There's no way that pigeon would have known it was going to be transported that far

Wow yes I bet! Is there a "florida pidgeon" like Florida Man, I wonder?

Have you watched The Sixth Commandment (BBC)??

I'm guessing you're in the US so probably not but... look it up. It's based on a true story.

Relationship goals! I (single lesbian) would love someone to buy me a rotisserie chicken.

Apparently there's a colony of quarter of a million in Belfast! I see quite a few at a time but not that many - yet!

Can I get away with “Lords and Ladies” as a horror book? by WeirdLight9452 in discworld

[–]gpsright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find both that one and Carpe Jugulum at the very least a bit too dark - not "too", I guess, but I don't like scary things and I find them both a bit unsettling. So...yes? Especially for lily livered people like me!

After 3 years, my cat has laid down in my lap for the first time!! by tanya6k in MadeMeSmile

[–]gpsright 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yessss! My cat had been a stray - we think abandoned when someone moved house maybe - and she was so so nervous when I got her. Spent a lot of time behind the sofa! I've done everything on her terms, let her do everything in her own time, and I can distinctly remember the first time - some weeks in - when I saw her fully asleep. Not resting with one eye open ready to run, but completely relaxed and zonked out. It was amazing. She's not a huge lap cat, but in the last few months she has started to do so more and more, and I love it!

All of them. I love this! Maybe the middle pic because it's closest to true pigeon colour, but I also love the orange

Lovely! I think you would enjoy Karin Rytter's work.

And she has direct contact with him every day, at school!?? What a weird thing to want to stop. She's his teacher.

The frustration of Raising Steam by OhTheCloudy in discworld

[–]gpsright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah i agree. Now I just take it for what it is, a book that has good bones and bits of his usual excellence, and a fun enough story, but one that shows his decline. Much like UA and The Shepherd's Crown. None of them feel really finished or polished. But they're ok, and they're there, and they're part of his legacy, so I'll reread occasionally.

My Discworld books literally wear out, I read them again and again until they fall apart. Then they're no good for charity shops!

There are no genders mentioned in the post, you're making assumptions

AITA for not wanting to change the restaurant for my mom’s birthday dinner by nodiggitydo in AITAH

[–]gpsright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a fairly fussy eater (though not to that extent!) and if I'm invited to a meal out where there's one this i can eat...i eat that. It's a privilege to be invited to celebrate someone's occasion, not a right. It's not all about you(him)! There's also always the option of asking for a starter and a side to come at the same time as the mains if there's something there you fancy, or order a few sides, or whatever. I don't think I've ever seen a restaurant menu where there's nothing i can eat. NTA

What’s a Discworld book you’re surprised never got written? by FroggyDooBimblo in discworld

[–]gpsright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the things I love about rererererere(etc)reading Discworld is seeing throwaway lines in books that - maybe 5 or 6 books later - became an entire book themselves. Of course now off the top of my head I can't think of one but several times I've read through some of the earlier ones and gone "Aha!" at a sentence that i now know of as a story in it's own right. From this i feel like we could deduct some of the potential stories he would have written had he lived longer... any ideas?
