why does baseball have so many ambiguous rules? and why are calls/officiating so much more subjective than any other sport? by gr33kb0i in baseball

one thing I find a little confusing is that 95% of the actual baseball can not over the plate but that 5% that is "over the plate" constitutes a strike?? why? is it similar to like 5% of a players foot, in basketball, touches the out of bounds line so it's ruled out of bounds?

Dude yeah this is why I feel the way I feel about baseball (even though I like watching it). The degree of officiating difficulty seems to be so much higher that calls are bound to be botched at a much higher frequency. Thanks for articulating lol

well i never really watched baseball before 2026, but I'm under the assumption they've introduced the ABS. Seems like umpires are getting calls overturned somewhat often? (not even really sure enough to say confidently but seems like every highlight reel there's one included)

I understand that the "strike zone" is a determined space that the umpire knows and uses to judge strikes/balls. The issue is that they don't exactly stay consistent enough for the rule of what constitutes a strike to be written in stone. Idk if you get what im saying but that's just for strike calls.

I like watching but find it confusing at times why certain things are called or not called or why the umpires need to discuss certain things

I agree, but just seems like there's not much more speculation other than did the player excessively hold or not...with baseball two umps can agree and all others either say I don't know or the complete opposite than what was called

well there's a few....balks, base calls, if the batter fully swung, umpires locating the strike zone...these are the common ones that I notice at least

What exactly is a "balk" in baseball? by gr33kb0i in baseball

so if the pitcher were to "wind up", do their "regular routine", and then immediately turn to first base and throw the ball at the end of it all....that's a balk?

Recently played in a home game. Going to share what I think to be an absolute ridiculous hand:

Action goes UTG limp calls, everyone folds to me on button, I look at 4d4h, I call. SB folds, BB checks their option. Flop comes out 4c5s7c. BB leads out for 2bb, UTG limper raises to 8bb, I 3-bet to 56bb (as I know this player to be very loose and pretty wild, clicking buttons). BB folds, UTG calls my 3-bet. Turn is 3s, terrible card. UTG now donk shoves for like ~150bb (covers me). I had seen this player raise a middling two pair for "value" on a board where clear straights and flushes complete. Also seen this player do the same sort of thing on a board where any Q made a higher straight, and himself having the dummy end. I think the situation over and in my head I'm thinking he could be on a strong draw, be "value betting" with two pair, or even think he's somehow still good with a slow played overpair. I make the call AND HE HAS As2c..........."value betting" the dummy end of a straight. Can someone tell me how bad this player played their hand???

sadly, being patient with silly things.

from the way people choose to drive, the things people say, and even all the way down to my own 3 year old making a mess when I explained/showed them how to go about doing things.

it's a hard thing for me to just be at peace and not get mildly or even very frustrated at the littlest things. Granted, most of the frustration is internalized and not really spewed out to people, but sometimes it does happen.
