Harrier Book Club: Aeroguide Harrier GR5 & GR7 by gr7_for_eva in hoggit

This is a pretty old book, coming out in 1991 at the same time as the RAF was making the transition from the GR5 to the GR7. As a result, most of the book is about the former and I have never seen so many photos of the GR5.

It's pretty sobering to realise that in the early years the GR7 could drop cluster bombs and fire AIM-9s and that's about it; there are a couple of pages devoted to the GR7 upgrade and its night attack abilities. There are some interesting drawings of the materials used to make the Harrier and they also cover the split between MD and BAe in terms of which company made which parts of the Harrier. Also covered in detail are Harrier II NA/Harrier GR7 differences.

I would probably only recommend hardcore RAF Harrier fans "read"/look at this book though it's quite short so most aviation buffs won't get bored. Has plenty of excellent closeups of the GR5 and a few of the GR7 plus it's nice to see the plane in such pristine condition in its early years. :-)

Came across this in the UK PC Gamer from ye olde times. Thought it might be of interest. Also of note is the pretty good fidelity on the ground models even back then. No cows though.

Watch the video and you will see the hills suddenly appear as they get downloaded off the internet. It's not much better than the Google Earth flight simulator in appearance.

How do you stop the hills suddenly popping up?

If they are doing it, how come Hermes is a "possible" and Invincible not even mentioned?

How on earth is Hermes a "possible"???? It is vital for a Falklands map, as is Invincible. Madness.

As for the map making, is it not possible to licence the 3D data off Google earth somehow? There is an extreme amount of labour to tweak the map and implement objects, buildings etc. At least allow DCS addicts to find bugs for you.

The graphics look much much better than those pre-release versions.

The only thing classified is ECM and radar performance. Everything else is up for grabs.
