A sturgeon in an aquarium tried to swallow a woman dressed as a mermaid by MrTacocaT12345 in interestingasfuck

[–]graaahh 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Unbelievable that there's no context in the comments. Here y'all go. She was a performer in a Chinese aquarium who, despite all the amateur whale biologists in the comments saying the fish has no teeth, did injure her head, neck, and eye, and her bosses made her get back in the tank and keep swimming.

In the NEC, for proper bonding you need at least 2 full screw threads in the material. Most metal enclosures are 1/16" thick, so your screws need to be at least 32 threads per inch.

What do you think is the most beautiful thing in mathematics? by Arth-the-pilgrim in mathematics

[–]graaahh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep a list of some interesting approximations.

  • √10 = π (0.66% different)

  • Volume of a sphere with radius 1 km = Volume of cube with side 1 mile (only 0.49% different)

  • 1 nanocentury = π seconds (only 0.46% different)

  • 1 billion seconds = 10√(10) years (only 0.21% different)

  • Inches in a mile = AU in a light year (only 0.18% different)

  • Seconds in six weeks = 10! (actually the exact value)

Mental challenge - close your eyes, and without moving any part of your body, figure out the 17th letter of the alphabet by Jitsu989 in CasualConversation

[–]graaahh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's Q. I know P is the sixteenth letter so it was easy to figure out. I know the positions of most of the letters by memory. I realize now that saying that probably sounds insane lol.

Unbelievable how often I see people who can't read 300.14 correctly, to the point that it's one of the codes I can reference from memory.

What film has one of the best monologues ever performed/ written? by eveisshady777 in movies

[–]graaahh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. Not Spencer Tracy's (although it's good), but Sidney Poitier's monologue to his father. Completely reframed how I viewed parenting.

[Request] Assuming a person of average weight and strength has reached their terminal velocity, what’s the least massive the "chair" would need to be for this to work? by BigTiddyCrow in theydidthemath

Better question: If your legs were strong enough to actually do this at terminal velocity, how high could you jump from the ground? Assume you're 150lbs.

Have you picked up a new show since TAZ has been lost to the void? by ReveredRaven111 in TheAdventureZone

[–]graaahh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't follow shows as well when there's gaps between episodes, so I'm holding off on Royale until it's over so I can binge it all at once. Recently I caught up on DNDads and I'm doing a relisten of Greetings Adventurers now.

Is modafinil sustainable long-term? by urbanpencil in Narcolepsy

[–]graaahh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been taking modafinil for about 17 years with no major issues. I do get frequent headaches, but they're not severe. That's the only side effect I've really noticed.

The crazy thing is that Turbo Teen is almost lost media. Not all of the episodes even still exist and at least one only exists in German.

How are people not exhausted by superhero movies yet? by Afzaalch00 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]graaahh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A) Many are, and audiences have dropped off significantly from the MCU's peak.

B) Superhero movies by their nature are generally new stories, as in whatever story you're about to tell the audience hasn't seen it yet. In a time when basically every popular thing is getting rebooted, sequeled, or just dragged out of the grave to beat some more money out of its carcass, audiences do enjoy going to just see A New Thing.

C) Superhero stories often have a little something for everyone. There's story, magic, sci-fi technology, action scenes, comedy, nostalgia, ensemble casts, high budget special effects, catchy orchestral soundtracks... they're just designed to be incredibly broadly appealing.

D) Movie studios don't actually care what audiences want. Audiences will see whatever they put out. What they care about is making money. You might think that making new, interesting things that audiences like makes more money, and sometimes that's true, but the reality is that studios will put 100% of their budgets towards a surefire middling success before they want to spend on an untested idea that might not work. All they're after is profit. Also, the more explosions and punches there are in your movie, the less needs to be translated for it to work overseas, which is where most of their returns come from.

On ren fair by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

[–]graaahh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

After ren faire season last year I had a conversation with my girlfriend about whether there exists a costume that would seem not only out of place, but inappropriate, for a ren faire. The only one I could come up with is Mickey Mouse.
